* {{Macrogame}}: Both games have a Campaign Mode which tracks a single pilot's progression across multiple missions until they either reach the end date (November 1918) or get removed from play early by death or mischance. Characters can earn promotions which allow them more leeway in mission planning and choice of available planes for each mission. When and where your character starts also serves as a meta-difficulty setting, as the Germans have a clear advantage in the earliest start dates and the Entente in the latest, though this ebbs and flows as new planes with better capabilities are introduced for both sides according to the historical timeline.

* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: With G-Forces enabled in the difficulty section, high-gee maneuvers will stress and strain your craft. Push your craft too hard, and you might well tear your own wings off.

* BodyCountCompetition: Campaign mode tracks the Top Ten aces of the war by number of kills, and getting your own name as high on that list as you can is your implicit goal.

* InstantDeathBullet: Averted. You ''can'' be killed instantly by a lucky burst of machine gun fire, but getting wounded often means that you have a limited amount of time to land your plane before you bleed out. Even then, it can take months of recovery in the field hospital before you're ready to fly (if you survive).

* AntiAir: Pretty primitive by modern standards, given that proximity-fused shells did not yet exist. Still, not something to be underestimated in large groups such as those found around observation balloons.

Ground-based machine gun nests can also be just as dangerous as their aerial counterparts if you give them a clear shot at you.

* NonstandardGameOver: While getting shot down often kills you outright, it's possible to survive a crash only to spend the rest of the war in a hospital or POW camp before you can recover or escape, respectively.
