After an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign, the project nevertheless could find a publisher (FDG Entertainment) and, better yet, was noticed by one of the founders of Westone Bit Entertainment and the creator of the ''Franchise/WonderBoy'' franchise, Ryuichi Nishizawa, who went on to collaborate on the game, and gave the studio the green light to turn the SpiritualSuccessor into a full-fledged sequel, with a story integrated in the overall Monster World continuity.

Moved the form-specific tropes to the characters page

* VoluntaryShapeshifting: In a departure from ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]'', the character is able to transform into any previously acquired form at will.

!Form-specific tropes:

* Human
** YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Just like Shion in ''VideoGame/WonderBoyInMonsterWorld'', he has blue hair.
* Pig
** GroundPound: One of his moves showcased in the trailer (it replaces the SwordPlant, since the Pig cannot handle weapons) .
** LegacyCharacter: Obviously is not the same Pig-man from ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]''.
** MythologyGag: Once the game became ''Monster Boy'', this form gained an eyepatch and started smoking in his idle animations. Pig men from ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]'' had eyepatches and smoked.
** PigMan: It is an anthropomorphic pig.
** TheNoseKnows: Useful to discover secrets.
** TookALevelInBadass: In ''Flying Hamster 2'', it was a cute pig that can't equip weapons or armor, can't fight... In other words, TheLoad. Here, it's a {{Badass}} smoking pirate pig that can at least use weapons.
* Frog
** OverlyLongTongue: Used as a grappling hook.
* Snake
** SuperSpit: Or rather, ''Acid'' spit.
** WallCrawl: Is able to freely slither along walls covered in green goo.
*** CeilingCling: Ditto for ceilings.
* Lion
** DashAttack: His signature move.
** WalkOnWater: Or, rather, run on water thanks to his dash attack.
* Dragon
** {{Flight}}: Has this power.
** UnexpectedShmupLevel: One of the scenes in the trailer shows him in the middle of one of these. Being the only flying character, he obviously is the only form able to participate in such levels.

After more than twenty years of silence (if not for the worldwide release of the English version of ''VideoGame/MonsterWorldIV'' in 2012) , the Franchise/WonderBoy series was suddenly UnCanceled in early 2015, when the trailer for a new installment was released. Instead of being titled ''Monster World'' (like all {{Metroidvania}}s in the series were called in Japan) or ''Wonder Boy'' (like they were still called everywhere else) , both titled were combined to form ''Monster Boy''. This in no small part because {{Sega}} still owns the original names (but not the games themselves, hence [[SerialNumbersFiledOff Serial Numbers]] [[AvertedTrope didn't need to be filed off]]) .

What finally became '''Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom''' was originally merely a SpiritualSuccessor to ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap]]'' created by the French developer ''Game Atelier'' called ''Flying Hamster II: Knight of the Golden Seed''.

The game is set to come out on PC and Playstation 4 in 2016. [[http://www.monsterboy.com/ Its official website is here]], complete with a trailer and a developer blog. The original Kickstarter campaign can be found [[https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/612975670/flying-hamster-ii here]].

!Tropes in this game include:

* {{Animorphism}}: A prominent feature from ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]'' that was brough back in the game.
* DolledUpInstallment: Started out as a sequel to ''Flying Hamster''...
** GenreShift: ...which is a CuteEmUp.
* HubCity: The only city that, during the ''Flying Hamster II'' period, was called Goldseety, is described as "the central town". It is also the only town seen on the map.
* {{Metroidvania}}: Much like ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]'', the protagonist will need to gain new transformations in order to be able to access new areas.
* MultiformBalance: As showcased on the ''Flying Hamster II'' Kickstarter page, every form has a special power, which is used to access new areas, solve new puzzles and/or fight enemies with different tactics.
* MythologyGag: Once the game became ''Monster Boy'', the pig transformation gained an eyepatch. Pig men from ''[[VideoGame/WonderBoyIIITheDragonsTrap The Dragon's Trap]]'' had eyepatches.
* PettingZooPeople: All of Monster Boy's transformations are anthropomorphic, wear armors and handle swords, except for the Snake form, which is... well, simply a snake.
* RecurringRiff: The developers promised on their blog that "Nightmare Castle", the iconic level theme that has been heard in all ''Monster World'' games, would make a return in this installment.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Just like Shion in ''VideoGame/WonderBoyInMonsterWorld'', the protagonist in this installment has blue hair.
