* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:A Light Side-aligned player can help people on Taris, bettering their lives and helping them with their problems. However, Darth Malak completely pulverizes the planet not too long after. VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic confirms that even the HopeSpot you get saving the Outcasts just damned them to a slow death instead of a fast one. The same thing happens with Dantooine, though its destruction is later in the game. As it turns out, the latter is a far more targeted strike, though it still causes horrible damage. The second game and VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic lets you walk through the ruins left on Dantooine.]]

[[spoiler: DoubleSubverted when you know about VideoGame/StarWarsTheOldRepublic. The Jedi were 100% correct that the Sith (more specifically, Emperor Vitiate) was behind the Mandalorians. However, their plan was to wait until Vitiate showed up, twirling his proverbial mustache. Revan deduced correctly that by the time the Sith did show up, it would be far too late to stop them.]]

* EnoughToGoAround: Unless you exploit a few of the GoodBadBugs, items like the Cassus Fett armor or the Circlet of Saresh were one of a kind. In the sequel, Obsidian took over and randomized the loot, which could lead to some accidental funny moments as you'd end up with a few dozen copies of something like Jolee's robes.

The game was also instrumental to solidifying the Xbox as a versatile console (though, like most "exclusives" for the original Xbox, it was also on the PC); before [=KotOR=], the system had a distinct lack of role-playing games and was derisively called an "[=FPS Box=]" due to the inordinate number of shooters on it. Furthermore, [=KotOR=] (alongside Morrowind) heralded the new MultiPlatform era of the WesternRPG genre, which had, until then, been mainly found on the PC. In 2013, it was even ported to the iPad and later to .

After years of rumors and speculation, at the [=PlayStation=] Showcase on September 9, 2021, it was finally confirmed that the game would be given an official remake -- simply titled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake -- as a timed PS5 exclusive. It is thus far unknown if the remake will be integrated into the canon timeline or remain a part of the Legends continuity. As part of the announcement, it was confirmed that Creator/JenniferHale will reprise her role as Bastila Shan. Unfortunately in early August of 2022, the remake lost two of its creative directors in a company dispute and the remake is now on hold.

* GameSystem: The underlying skill and combat mechanics of this game are based on a modified TabletopGame/StarWarsD20 tabletop RPG ruleset. WordOfGod (of the lead designer James Ohlen, specifically) is that this was made primarily to save development costs: the Odyssey Engine that [=KotOR=] runs on was based on the Aurora Engine of VideoGame/NeverwinterNights, and by adopting another UsefulNotes/D20System-based ruleset, the developers could reuse most of the old code.

* EvilIsEasy: Actions toward the TheDarkSide are simpler, quicker, affect your alignment to a greater extreme, and are more numerous than Light Side. For example, there's one sidequest that is nothing but Dark Side acts... and some of the best equipment you can get without paying. Do them all and you can drop from full Light to half in just five easy steps. You have to do at least twice as many Light Side acts for such a shift.

* LostPropertyLiveDrop: After you kill in the wilderness of whatever planet you visit first in your search for the Star Forge, you will later be unexpectedly approached in the street by a stranger who claims that you dropped your datapad. If you accept the "lost" pad, he'll tell you to check to make sure it isn't broken before promptly leaving; the datapad turns out to be a message from the Genoharadan, inviting you to a meeting on Manaan to discuss membership - and warning you to come alone or not at all.
