You are [[TheHero a Hero]]. The [[DesignatedVillain Evil Lord]] is attempting to cast a spell that will destroy the world. The spell takes thirty seconds to cast. Therefore, you have thirty seconds to SaveTheWorld.

SaveTheWorld. [[CaptainObvious Of course you fail]]. That's until the Time Goddess offers a bargain with you; she'll let you turn back time to the start of the 30 seconds for a fee. Once you say yes, you go off to fight said Evil Lord. Lather, rinse, repeat once you find out other Evil Lords elsewhere knows the same spell that'll destroy the world in 30 seconds as you go across the land and try to find out why such a spell exists.

* TimeyWimeyBall: The Time Goddess seems to be able to selectively turn back time to the Hero's benefit. Destroyed villages are restored, avalanches are reversed, and forest fires are reset, but the Hero's own hard work is generally unaffected. You get to keep your gold, experience, and items, NPCs you've rescued stay rescued, minibosses you've defeated don't return, etc. This is used to great effect in one plot branch: if you pay her enough, the Time Goddess erases your DealWithTheDevil, but not anything you did with the Devil's power.
