''Bravely Default: Flying Fairy'' (''Bravely Default: Where the Fairy Flies'' in Europe) is an EasternRPG for the Nintendo3DS developed by Silicon Studio and published by SquareEnix. It is a GaidenGame to the [[RunningGag neck-breakingly popular]] ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' series. It is said to be the successor to ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyThe4HeroesOfLight Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light]]'', although whether this is SpiritualSuccessor or sequel is not yet known.

Agnes Oblige is a young woman [[TheChosenOne chosen to be the protector]] of the Wind Crystal, one of the four elemental Crystals that rule over the land of Luxendarc. When the Wind Crystal is consumed by darkness, Agnes must embark on a grand journey across the world to purify it, with [[FairyCompanion the guidance of a magical Crystal Fairy]] called Airy.

Aiding her on her journey is an eclectic group of characters: Tiz Oria, a heroic young man [[SurvivorGuilt who survived a great disaster]]; Ringabel, an enigmatic {{Casanova}}; and Edea Lee, a chivalrous knight from the country of Eternia who was originally sent to capture Agnes. Opposing them are the Job Masters of the Eternian Air Force, who aim to seize the power of the Crystals for their own use.

It was released in Japan in October 11, 2012, a localization has been confirmed with a European release date of December 6, 2013 and a North American release sometime in early 2014.

It has a sequel in a form of a free-to-play browser game called ''Bravely Default: Praying Brage''.

Random fact: the lead writer is [[VisualNovel/SteinsGate Naotaka Hayashi]]. In addition, the game's score is by Revo of SoundHorizon fame.

* CoversAlwaysLie: in spite of the cover and title, you can't ever play as a flying fairy.
* ClassAndLevelSystem: What the game's gameplay revolves around, and applies to the enemies, too.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Tiz to Agnes, which doubles over on TheDulcineaEffect as he declares his intention to protect her on their first meeting.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Arguably why Edea joins Agnes' party in the first place.
* GoldenThighRatio: The White Mage Jobmaster, Holly White.
* GratuitousEnglish: The title, which makes close to zero sense in English. According to TheOtherWiki, [[WordOfGod Naotaka Hayashi]], the game's writer, has stated that the title means "have courage and renounce the promises and responsibilities that are expected of you."
* [[spoiler: GroundhogDayLoop]]
* HandsomeLech: Agnes has Ringabell pegged as this upon their first meeting and actually didn't want him to tag along with Tiz and her for this very reason. She's not exactly far off on her [[ChivalrousPervert assumption either]].

* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Ringabell, of course. [[spoiler: Eventually it's revealed he's actually Anazel D, the dark knight who is a part of the Council of Six.]]
* MeaningfulName: Applies to Edea's whole family when romanized. Edea Lee, when romanized, would be "ideally," referring to her take on her nation's desire to capture Agnes; Brave Lee, or "bravely," would be a nod to the title; and lastly, her mother, Okae Lee, would be "okaeri" in terms of gladly welcoming her daughter home despite siding with Agnes.
** [[spoiler: Take out the f from each word in the subtitles "Flying Fairy" and you get "Lying Airy".]]
* MeaningfulRename: Ringabell, who gave himself that name after losing his memory.
* MsFanservice: Agnes's artwork and images [[http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/4/49/BDFF_Woman.jpg are quite gratuitous]], and the first English trailer for the game had a lot of MaleGaze focused on her back and thighs.
** Then there's the infamous Bravo Bikini scene in Flowell, which warrants the UnfortunateImplications that jar some of the fandom.

* PrettyInMink: A few of the outfits are fur-trimmed.
* RandomEncounters
* SceneryPorn: The attention to detail and lighting of the gorgeous backgrounds makes them the star of the released screenshots.
* SlapSlapKiss: Ringabell and Edea's interactions teeter strongly on this. Ringabell has a tendency to push all of the wrong buttons in Edea, who is very easily provoked. [[spoiler: The fact that Ringabell is Anazel contributes a lot, as Edea holds a close relationship with him.]]
* TitleDrop: The [[http://www.siliconera.com/2012/06/25/bravely-defaults-third-demo-introduces-the-battle-system-this-week/ Brave and Default system]] seeems to be this.
* UpdatedRerelease: Almost by tradition of Square Enix, Bravely Default: For the Sequel will be adding some additional scenarios and the highly requested additional save slots. Additionally, it'll feature an updated battle and UI systems which came about from developing the sequel, and thus backported to the original. Luckily for everyone outside Japan, this version is the one being localized.
