In it, the protagonist Fassin Taak makes passing reference (literally, it's a single line in the entire book) to a group of itinerant Dweller youths known as the Raucous Rascals. Somehow it became depluralised and the qualifier changed, but that's where it originally came from.

Incidentally, {{The Algebraist}} should probably win an award for '''Novel Plot Twist Rendered Most Obvious To Readers With A Grasp Of Wormhole Mechanics'''. But, whatever.
