He has a vision problem rather generically called 'retinal dystrophy' which just means 'something's not right in the retina.' There's a gene in his family that's carried on the X chromosome but manifests only if the child's male. He is male. This does not bother him much, considering it's not crippling; it just prevents him from driving.
