->The Multiverse: Where writers put the story's that don't make sense.
->Motivational poster on the DC Comics multiverse.
DCComics originally had all their books take place their own continuity, however starting with All Star Comics issue 3 the DCUniverse was created. This eventually lead to some problems as the SlidingTimescale of the DCU couldn't be maintained forever as the characters would have to age at some point. Especially since many character were seen fighting in World War Two. As such when the TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks began all characters history's were rebooted or replaced such is the case with the original Jay Garrick and Alan Scott with the younger Hal Jordan and Barry Allen. Then in Flash # 123 had Barry Allen and Jay Garrick team-up in which it was explained that the TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks occurred on Earth-Two and the Silver Age of Comic Books occurred on Earth-One.
Since then continuity was almost impossible to figure out due to the various Earth's, Retcons, and incontinent story's that had grown over the various years. As such to celebrate the 50th anniversary of DC Comics CrisisOnInfiniteEarths had the entire multiverse destroyed and the five universes left were merged into one in order to make continuity simpler. Unfortunately this lead to more confusion and many attempts were made to clear up continuity issues left behind from the Crisis in ZeroHour. Among the most famous are LegionOfSuperHeroes, Donna Troy, and anything to do with Hawkman. As a result DC just reboots every couple of years in order to get a fresh start for readers (at least with newcomers, defiantly not long time readers).
Recently the multiverse was brought back in InfiniteCrisis and expanded in 52. Not all of the universes have been named yet though and a majority that have been numbered seem to be in CanonDiscontinuity since they were classified in CountdownToFinalCrisis Which Never Happened. Additionally it's said via WordOfGod that as a result of ComicBook/Flashpoint the multiverse has gone through another reboot.
!!Original Multiverse:
The original DC multiverse consisted of infinite universes and there was no set in stone designation for Earth's. For example Earth-Three was also known as Earth-3 sometimes with the comic it was featured in switching between the two. As mentioned above because of Crisis On Infinite all worlds were destroyed but this didn't stop people from using the concept. For Example Animal Man had a story arc where Psycho-Pirate summoned characters from various continuity's.

* A universe where earth is Homage identical to the Earth-One BizarroWorld down to the cube shaped planet and the Bizarro versions of DC comic book characters.

* The universe where all story's that take place in the SilverAgeOfComicBook's. Known for it's {{Elseworlds insane story lines such as Batman having to wear a pink and Superman having the ability to shoot out miniature clones of himself through his hands.
** This world's version of Hawkman is the Thanagarian Katar Hol, GreenLantern is Hal Jordan, TheFlash is Barry Allen, TheAtom is Ray Palmer, and the JusticeLeagueOfAmerica was established in this universe. All these characters would be brought into New Earth where their history's were changed.
** Also it's notable that the Pre-Crisis LegionOfSuperHeroes are refugees from this Earth that now live on New Earth. Despite this it's been stated that Legion of Super Heroes entire history on New Earth up to CrisisOnInfiniteEarths remained the same besides some minor details.
** This also was the core reality until the villain Krona fractured reality at the being of time creating the Multiverse.
** Merged with the four remaining universes of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

* The universe where all DC story's of TheGoldenAgeOfComicBooks occur. Not only was this the first official universe but the original versions Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, the Al Pratt version of Atom, and the archaeologist Carter Hall version of Hawkman all existed on this Earth. There is however equivalents to Batman, Superman, and WonderWoman as most universes do.
** Notably many heroes fought in WorldWarTwo on this Earth but due to ReedRichardsIsUseless Hitler prevents any hero from just flying in and straight up killing him by creating a magical barrier preventing any super hero from going near him via the Spear of Destiny. As such the heroes battles in World War Two are mostly downplayed compared to actual soldiers actual missions in the war. This would remain the same for many Earth-Two characters who would be brought into the rebooted universe like Jay Garrick and Alan Scott.
** However there is some AlternateHistory elements in Earth-Two as Quebec was an independent nation autonomous from Canada, South Africa had abolished apartheid sooner, and the Atlantean countries of Poseidonis and Tritonis were ruled by a queen, not a king. Inhabitants of Atlantis also displayed surface-dweller features and no capacity for underwater survival, as the Atlantis continent had been raised to the surface. It's also been stated that this universe passes in real time instead of ComicBookTime.
** Merged with the four remaining universes of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

** History is also displayed as being 'backwards' as American Christopher Columbus discovered Europe; Britain won its freedom from the United States, President John Wilkes Booth was assassinated by actor Abraham Lincoln, and the United States flag's colors are reversed with black stars on a red field and alternating blue and black stripes. Oh and the entire heroes are bad guys and villians are good guys thing.

He later settles down with Wonder Woman and have a son.

** The entire gimmick of Tangent Comics was to create radically different characters such as this Earth's Superman being African-American with vast mental powers has conquered the entire planet and has outlawed all superpowered beings save for those who work under his command.
** History also diverges in the Tangent universe where due to interference of the original Atom caused the Cuban Missile Crisis to escalate into a limited nuclear exchange that results in the nuclear obliteration of Florida and Cuba.

* Universe in which BatmanYearOne, TheDarkKnightReturns, TheDarkKnightStrikesBack, AllStarBatmanAndRobin, and Spawn/Batman (though often ignored due to legal issues). Also home to CanonForeigner Carrie Kelley the third Robin and first Catgirl.
** Heroes in this universe are either psychopaths or incredibly stupid. For example Batman beating thugs near death and having the inability to shut up about how lame Superman is, Superman becoming a a federal agent because he apparently isn't able to help live, WonderWoman being an utter bitch, and GreenLantern leaving Earth in order to marry some sort of play dough like alien.
** Batman: Year One is the only one of these books that is still canon to the main universe as well.

* Events seen in Batman: In Darkest Knight one-shot in which Bruce Wayne becomes this Earth's Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan.

Forerunners are matriarchal, telepathic through their eldest living female, living in a society that kills off the weakest of its kind, and unaware of what happens outside of their solar system.
** While human characters are not present, alternate versions of extraterrestrial characters such as MartianManhunter, Jemm and Starman also exist

* A universe where Firestorm has turned the sun red causing Superman and Supergirl to wear advanced armor similar to Superboy-Prime in order to keep their powers.

* The Wildstorm Universe.
** Merged with Earth-0.

* Probably the most dangerous CrapsackWorld in the entire DC Multiverse (and that's saying something). Unlike others which have had their entire universes destroyed almost all life in the entire universe was destroyed TWICE both because of CountdownToFinalCrisis.
** Timeline 1:A utopian world where secret identities are no longer needed by superheroes. Libby Lawrence-Chambers is President of the United States, Zatanna is a therapist, and Ray Palmer was replaced by his counterpart from Earth-0.
*** This Earth owes its peace to a Batman who went on a one-man crusade and eliminated all of the world's supervillains in retaliation for the Joker's murder of Jason Todd.
*** The entire universe was wiped out by a battle between Monarch and Superboy-Prime, save for its Monitor, Nix Uotan, and a lone plant sprout on an unknown planet.
** Timeline 2: Nix Uotan successfully recreated his universe, at first making it resemble Earth-0, except that certain people, including the Challengers from Beyond, had never existed there. Solomon, the Monitor of Earth-8, conspired for it to be infected by the Morticoccus virus, triggering the Great Disaster which transformed this Earth into the setting of Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth.
*** By the time of the events of Final Crisis, Earth-51 is a "graveyard universe" devoid of life. At the end of FinalCrisis, it becomes the home of the resurrected NewGods.

* A world of pulp characters, both derived from classic DC characters and also drawing on classic literary pulp characters as well. It is said this world lacks a Superman as not to devalue Doc Savage.
** Universe where the DocSavage/Batman crossover specials, the mini-series First Wave, the current ongoing of DocSavage by DC and the second volume of Will Eisner's TheSpirit by DC take place.
** An Asian version of BlackCanary and a mute black version of Rima the Jungle Girl also live here.

* The universe of the mini-series JLA The Nail and it's sequels. In this universe Superman was adopted by Amish people preventing him from becoming the hero he would. This caused heroes to be more violent and feared in this universe due to the wide spread of Superman's code never shaping.

* This universe is a bright, optimistic place where no-one ever dies (including the inhabitants of Krypton and Thomas and Martha Wayne). Mr Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite brought characters from this universe to Earth-0 to see how they fared. This led to the 'death' of this Earth's Superman. In reality though he was really just sleeping and woke up some time later.

!!Post-Flashpoint Multiverse
After the the events of Flashpoint the entire DC Multiverse was restated again due to Barry Allen merging Earth-0, Earth-13, and Earth-50. As of right now not much is now outside the character Pandora having supposedly made Barry do this in order to make reality stronger. Also the rule of Krypointe only working on people from the same universe is still in effect as seen in Action Comics volume 2.

* Universe created after the reboot of all of DC's books and the main universe.
** So far the continuity of Batman, GreenLantern, and LegionOfLegionOfSuperHeroes seem to be largely unaffected.

* Much like Pre-Flashpoint Earth 1 this universe is where the Batman: Earth One and Superman: Earth One graphic novels and their sequels take place.

* This Earth contains new and much younger versions of DC's Golden Age heroes.

** This world's Supergirl and Robin, now using the identities of Power Girl and the Huntress, were transported to Earth-0 during the war and are seeking a way back.
** This world's Wonder Woman worships the Roman gods instead of the Greek gods like her Earth-0 counterpart.
** The Alan Scott of this universe is homosexual.

** On this world, Superman is a black man named Kalel, originally from Krypton's Vathlo Island. In his secret identity of Calvin Ellis, he serves as President of the United States.
** This world's Wonder Woman is a black woman named Nubia.

* On this world, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen attempted to create a savior. Instead they got a robotic Superman who took over their world.
** The Superman robot was defeated by the Superman of Earth-23. The Clark, Lois, and Jimmy of this world are currently residing on Earth-23.

* A universe much like the original Super Deformed universe.
** Taken over by the Robotic Superman mentioned above.

* One of the best known examples for MirrorWorld, it is the home universe of the Crime Syndicate of America, evil versions of the Earth-One heroes including Expy Ultraman, Superwoman, Owlman, Power Ring, Johnny Quick as well as the heroic Alexander Luthor, his wife Lois Lane, and his son Alexander Luthor, Jr

Barbara later assumes the Robin mantle while seeking revenge for her lover's death.

Each universe within the Multiverse is separated by it's own version of the Source Wall, behind which Anti-Life keeping the universes apart. The Bleed (a concept from Wildstorm) is what spreads the Anti-Life in unpredictable places behind the Source Wall, allowing for transport between the universes. Should the destruction of New Earth occur a chain reaction would happen in which the destruction of the other fifty-one alternate universes would soon follow, leaving only the Antimatter Universe in existence. In reality though he was really just sleeping and woke up some time later.

!!Post-Flashpoint Multiverse
After the the events of Flashpoint the entire DC Multiverse was restated again due to Barry Allen merging Earth-0, Earth-13, and Earth-50.

* An almost exact copy of the universe shown in Batman & Dracula: Red Rain.
** In this universe Nightwing Dick Grayson became a vampire hunter after the vampire Batman killed his parents. After killing a vampire version Batgirl Barbra Gordon he finds Batman's crypt but finds himself unable to kill him. Batman takes advantage of this and turns him into a vampire making Grayson his sidekick.

* Native home of the Forerunners, creatures bred by the Monitors from all the alien races of the solar system after the destruction of all human life on Earth (now called War World) in a war against other planets.

* The Wildstorm Universe.

* Surviving CrisisOnInfiniteEarths the Anti-Matter Universe acts as the home to the Anti-Monitor, the JLA: Earth 2 incarnation of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika, the obscure character Warlock of Ys, and the Weaponers of Qward.
** Also acts as the Sinestro Corps base of operations.

* Similar to our world, superheroes exist only in fiction except for to Superboy-Prime and the 2004 incarnation of the LegionOfSuperHeroes.

** Limbo holds The Infinite Book which contains the story of all existence and has been described as the one story that contains all other stories.

* Much like Pre-Flashpoint Earth 1 this universe is where the Batman: Earth One and Superman: Earth One graphic novels and their sequels take place.

** This world's Supergirl and Robin, now using the identities of Power Girl and the Huntress, were transported to Earth-0 during the war and are seeking a way back.
