* WriteWhatYouKnow:
** The hero's parents die at the beginning of the story, leaving him to be brought up by his grandmother, with the parents' wish that he is educated in England. Creator/RoaldDahl's own father died when Dahl was young, with the wish that he was educated in England, saying that English schools are the best in the world.
** The idea of witches wearing wigs to hide their baldness, and having no toes may have been inspired by two of Dahl's fellow passengers on his two-week sea voyage to Africa, as described in his autobiography ''Going Solo'': the elderly Miss Trefuis hated the sight of toes so much that she could not bear to cut her own toenails, and she made all the native boys on her farm wear shoes. Dahl's cabin companion U. N. Savory went to great lengths to hide his baldness, wearing wigs of different lengths every week, and sprinkling Epsom Salts on his shoulders to make out he had dandruff.
** The grandmother lovingly describes summer holidays in Norway, which were a staple of Dahl's own childhood.

! From the 1990 film:
* ApprovalOfGod: Not the film itself (see below) but Creator/RoaldDahl was ecstatic when Creator/AnjelicaHuston was cast as the Grand High Witch. After Creator/SpikeMilligan wasn't cast as [[Film/WillyWonkaAndTheChocolateFactory Willy Wonka]], Dahl had given up requesting casting decisions for adaptations of his book. But she had been his personal favourite for the role.
* DisownedAdaptation: Creator/RoaldDahl allegedly hated the film version so much that he stood outside cinemas with a megaphone telling people not to watch. (He was sick at the time and [[AuthorExistenceFailure actually died later that year]], so that should give you an idea of how much he hated it.) There was at least ''one thing'' he liked about the movie, though: Anjelica Huston's performance as The Grand High Witch.
* FocusGroupEnding: An ending more in line with the book's was filmed but test audiences disliked it. So instead [[spoiler: an ending where Luke is turned back into a boy, with the same being implied to happen to Bruno too]] was inserted. As noted above, Dahl was not happy with this change.
* InMemoriam: "For Creator/JimHenson".
* KeepCirculatingTheTapes: There was an ending filmed that was more in line with that of the book, unfortunately it was not included in the film, much to Creator/RoaldDahl's dismay. It also hasn't seen any release as an extra on VHS or DVD.
** Some scenes were edited down or cut entirely due to the director realising they were too scary after seeing his son's reaction to the initial cut of the film. These scenes haven't seen any form of release.
* PlayingAgainstType: Creator/RowanAtkinson as a serious hotel manager, who's the OnlySaneMan to the rest of the wacky characters.
** Admittedly at the time this film was made Atkinson was more known for OnlySaneMan and DeadpanSnarker parts like this such as Series/{{Blackadder}}, and he hadn't yet become iconic as Series/MrBean, which lessens this trope somewhat.
* PosthumousCredit: Despite his May 1990 death, Creator/JimHenson is still given a credit as producer, since he was heavily involved in the film's production.
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: Lorimar folded after the film was completed, and it languished for over a year until Creator/WarnerBros released it (having bought Lorimar and inherited it).
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Before Creator/AnjelicaHuston was cast, Creator/AnneBancroft, Music/{{Cher}}, Music/EarthaKitt, Creator/FayeDunaway, Creator/JodieFoster, Creator/OliviaHussey, Creator/LizaMinnelli, Creator/VanessaRedgrave. Creator/SusanSarandon and Creator/SigourneyWeaver were all considered for the Grand High Witch.
* WrittenInInfirmity: Mai Zetterling (Grandma) really did have a missing finger, which was exploited for the film. A marginal example, as Grandmamma has a missing thumb in the book too.
