* RefittedForSequel: The scene where Narzug's hunters chases Thorin and Company into Rivendell, only to be killed or driven off by the Elves protecting it, is very similar to a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INpNClBi60Q deleted scene]] from ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' where the titular group is pursued into Lothlorien by Moria Orcs, which are then cut down by a volley of arrows fired by Galadhrim archers.

** The exposition of the dwarves and their culture is similar to early, much more expanded versions of the prologue from ''Fellowship of the Ring'', and several shots such as the dwarves mining gems are transplanted to this film.

* ThrowItIn: Barry Humphries, spontaneously ad-libbed the Goblin King's line "That'll do it", before he is killed by Gandalf. Creator/PeterJackson greatly appreciated the unscripted humorous line, as he was concerned about the level of violence in the scene.

* DeletedScene: The film ends earlier than was initially intended before the third film was commissioned. The scenes of Mirkwood were moved into the second movie in order to spread out the story more over the three installments.

* DeletedScene: It does appear that the film ends somewhat earlier than was initially intended before the third film was commissioned. The most prominent evidence is the toys that are available of Legolas and Tauriel, neither of whom appear in the first film, and specifically a Lego set based in Mirkwood containing those two characters. These scenes were possibly moved into the second movie in order to spread out the story more over the three installments.

Added DiffLines:

* ActingForTwo: The Trolls were voiced and portrayed through motion capture by three of the Dwarf actors: Peter Hambleton (Glóin), Mark Hadlow (Dori), and William Kircher (Bifur).

* OneTakeWonder: Stephen Hunter (Bombur) caught the egg thrown into his mouth on the first take, but was unable to catch it on subsequent takes. Therefore the take used was the first one.
* ThrowItIn: Barry Humphries, spontaneously ad-libbed the Goblin King's line "That'll do it", before he is killed by Gandalf. Creator/PeterJackson greatly appreciated the unscripted humorous line, as he was concerned about the level of violence in the scene.
* WrittenInInfirmity: While filming the Battle of Azanulbizar, Creator/RichardArmitage smacked himself in the face so hard with his shield that he managed to bite completely through his lower lip. The injury can be seen in the finished movie. When Azog holds up Thror's severed head, and Thorin screams, the left side of his lower lip is swollen, and there is a pool of blood between his gums and his lip.
