Douglas Adams lacked the time to be involved in making the game, so instead he recommended an author friend of his who he believed could fill the spot. Unfortunately, that did not work out. The game's designer on Infocom's side summed up why things fell apart as, "He's a good writer, but he can't wrap his head around how games work."
