** You Love Me was a 1999 EP released for free exclusively on the band's official website and never saw a commercial reissue - notably it was the first release for the Golden Lies lineup of the band, and only two out of the seven songs ended up on Golden Lies itself.

** During the Too High To Die sessions, the label was pushing for a single that could be marketed to AlternativeRock radio - As a joke, Derrick Bostrom wrote a song called "Don't Touch My Stuff", which was a stylistic parody of bands like and Music/JanesAddiction, and had thinly veiled lyrics about ExecutiveMeddling: the label actually liked it, so they stopped working on the song altogether, and it's still never seen the light of day.

** In the oral history book Too High To Die, Curt muses that hypothetically he could have billed the supergroup / side project Eyes Adrift as a new Meat Puppets lineup for the brand recognition, with Golden Lies setting precedent for it. However, he also notes this might have offended the other members - particularly Krist Novoselic, who had the idea to form the band in the first place.

** The band had auditioned second guitarists to tour in support of Too High To Die, and one of them was John Frusciante, who had just left Music/RedHotChiliPeppers and had apparently stated in an interview that the Meat Puppets were the only other band he'd consider joining.

* BasedOnADream: As a child, Curt Kirkwood had a nightmare about a lamb eerily floating above his backyard in the moonlight - this imagery inspired the song "You Love Me".

** During a temporary breakup of the band, Curt Kirkwood formed a new group called Royal Neanderthal Orchestra. However, no record company would sign them without the Meat Puppets' name attached, so they changed their name and became the new lineup of Meat Puppets.

Removing an example I originally added myself - "Backwater" being a result of executive meddling is something I read about on a forum as posted by someone allegedly involved with the band, but I've found no other evidence for it. Meanwhile I'm adding a similar What Could Have Been that was mentioned by Derrick Bostrom in the book Too High To Die.

** Members have said this is basically the reason "Backwater" exists: The band wrote the song during the Too High To Die sessions but didn't like it much and considered leaving it off the album -- but their label smelled a hit, and supposedly wouldn't release the album without the inclusion of "Backwater".

I added this entry and I'm removing it based on the description on the main Creator Breakdown page - my source was a biography speculating how the band's personal lives might have affected the content of the album, not anything coming from the band themselves.

* CreatorBreakdown: Possibly No Joke!, which was recorded while the mother of the Kirkwood brothers was struggling with cancer, Cris Kirkwood was addicted to heroin, and Derrick Bostrom was tiring of the lifestyle of being in a touring band. The album was heavier sounding than their previous one (Too High To Die), and while the lyrics were still too abstract to directly deal with any of these issues, they included less humor and more dark imagery and pessimistic sentiments.
