Names The Same is no longer a trope

* NamesTheSame: Throughout the film, Creator/FredricMarch's character is referred to as "Bothwell," as his surname, Hepburn (and he was, indeed, distantly related to Katherine) might have proved distracting, while his given name, James, would have broken the OneSteveLimit. Also, the Earl of Moray is named Creator/JamesStewart, though that is ''not'' particularly avoided, as the actor had not yet come to prominence.

Added DiffLines:

* CreatorBacklash: This wasn't one of Creator/JohnFord's favourite works, losing interest early on. He didn't think the story was very strong, and didn't like the blank verse dialog. The film did not do well at the box office and he seldom mentioned it in conversation.
* DirectedByCastmember: According to Creator/KatharineHepburn, during the filming of Mary and Bothwell's love scene, Creator/JohnFord, rather fed up with the idea of directing a romantic costume drama written in blank verse, simply said to Hepburn, "Here; you direct this scene." And she did.
* FatalMethodActing: Creator/KatharineHepburn credited Creator/JohnFord with saving her life one day on the set. They were shooting a scene of Hepburn on horseback when the horse she was riding kept going unexpectedly. Ford yelled at Hepburn to duck just before she was about to collide with a low branch.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/KatharineHepburn wanted Creator/GeorgeCukor as director, but after the failure of ''Film/SylviaScarlett'', producer Pandro S. Berman refused to let them work together again.
** Creator/BetteDavis and Creator/GingerRogers were both interested in playing Elizabeth, the latter even doing a screen test.
