According to translations of the actual developer text, it was never outright confirmed that the eighth party member was Gaspar - they refer to the character as an "old man" archtype, but it's a generic word and isn't the same kanji used for Gaspar in the final game or prototype, and while Gaspar's Zeal sprite shows him with a rod, Melchior holds a staff that looks more similar to the concept art, and the overall design has more similarities to Belthasar (note that Belthasar's sprite even doesn't have a beard). Since it's such an early concept, it could by any of them or even a predecessor character. Also, went into more detail about the Crono idea, and replaced the bit about Ayla's personal sidequest (which I can't find info on and may have been confused with Singing Mountain, which wasn't supposed to be a sidequest) with unused locations in general.

** Ayla Several locations were cut from the game. The most infamous of these is Singing Mountain (aka Chanting Mt), a prehistoric dungeon whose music still remains in the game data (which was going to have eventually used for a late-game persona sidequest like every other character, but different location in the DS version, along with a similarly-dummied battle theme).
