!!The film
* DyeingForYourArt: Averted. Creator/HayleyAtwell was asked to lose weight for the role of Julia (who, to be fair, is described in the novel as fashionably waifish) but Creator/EmmaThompson [[http://nymag.com/thecut/2008/02/emma_thompson_fights_miramaxs_1.html put her foot down]] upon finding out, threatening to leave the production unless Atwell was allowed to maintain her natural weight.

* MisaimedFandom: Brideshead Revisited is a story that, in Waugh's own words, is about "the operation of divine grace on a group of diverse but closely connected characters", where most of the main characters struggle with their faith before a final triumphant embracing of it. For the Catholic audience, the message is clear. To many others, [[FanMyopia it's all about the relationship between Sebastian and Charles.]] As a devout Catholic himself, Waugh would be vexed indeed by the fanbase that has developed around Brideshead.

** Creator/Sir LaurenceOlivier was offered his choice of roles in either Lord Marchmain or Edward Ryder. Olivier picked Lord Marchmain, but later regretted the choice as he realized that Edward Ryder was actually a much stronger role.

!!The novel
* WriteWhoYouKnow: Cousin Jasper was based on Creator/EvelynWaugh's own brother Alec, who delivered a similar "exasperated warning" to his brother while at Oxford.

!!The miniseries
* CaliforniaDoubling: The island of Gozo doubled for Morocco, Mexico and Central America.
* CastTheRunnerUp:
** Originally, producer Derek Granger asked Creator/AnthonyAndrews to play the role of Charles Ryder. Andrews, however, felt he was better suited for the part of Sebastian Flyte. Creator/JeremyIrons, Granger's first choice for Sebastian, preferred to play Ryder, so the two actors swapped roles.
** Creator/Sir LaurenceOlivier was offered his choice of roles in either Lord Marchmain or Edward Ryder. Olivier picked Lord Marchmain, but later regretted the choice as he realized that Edward Ryder was actually a much stronger role.

Added DiffLines:

* RomanceOnTheSet: Director Charles Sturridge married Phoebe Nicholls (Cordelia).
* TroubledProduction:
** In the summer of 1979, director Lindsay-Hogg began principal photography on the island of Gozo. Shortly after the cast and crew returned to England, a technician's strike brought all ITV production to a halt. By the time it was settled four months later, Lindsay-Hogg was no longer available due to a prior commitment to another project. Lindsay-Hogg was replaced by relative novice Charles Sturridge.
** Cast contracts had to be renegotiated to take into account the extended filming period. Creator/JeremyIrons, who was planning to audition for ''Film/TheFrenchLieutenantsWoman'', stipulated he would remain with the production under condition he would be allowed time off to film the movie if he were cast. Rather than scrap the considerable completed footage in which the actor appeared, Granger agreed. Eventually, filming got so far behind that he was working on both projects simultaneously.
** During the enforced break in filming caused by the strike, it was noticed by the cast and producer that an important scene (Julia in tears while sitting by the fountain at night) had not been included in the script. They decided that it should be put in. In fact, during filming, the cast and crew had only a vague idea how many episodes would result. The final script was apparently not written by John Mortimer. Producer Derek Granger simply selected scenes and lines from the pages of the novel, though Mortimer still had to be credited for contractual reasons.
* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: Creator/LaurenceOlivier's tight schedule required he start immediately, but his scenes had not yet been written, and the writers hurried to complete them so the actor would have at least a week to learn his dialogue. Mona Washbourne was less fortunate and received her script the day she arrived on the set to begin filming.

* DawsonCasting: The story begins with Charles and Sebastian as first year undergraduates so presumably they are 18/19 years old despite both Creator/JeremyIrons and Creator/AnthonyAndrews being well into their 30s. Other cast members playing their contemporaries are about the same age as well.

* AdaptationalContextChange:
** In the novel, Julia's marriage to Rex Mottram is in many ways an act of rebellion, as it happens over her family's objections. In the movie, the family ''want'' her to marry Rex, and agreeing to do so makes Julia seem much more weak and dominated.
** In the novel, Jasper warns Charles off of Anglo-Catholics[[labelnote:*]]Anglicans with Catholic sympathies[[/labelnote]] in general, saying "they're all sodomites with unpleasant accents". In the movie, Jasper remarks, "Sodomites, all of them!", but is speaking specifically of the ''Roman'' Catholic Sebastian and Anthony Blanche, turning a piece of rhetorical bigotry into a specific comment on the characters' sexuality.
