Added DiffLines:

* AmusingInjuries: Loki, poor Loki. During the battle near the end, he tells the Hulk about how poorly he thinks of him. [[spoiler:Hulk doesn't like it, and proceeds to smash him around, turn around and call him "puny God". Bonus points for Loki waking shortly thereafter, captured but instantly alert and snarky, in a Loki-shaped depression in the floor.]]

Added DiffLines:

* AttentionWhore: Tony Stark, good god. He's partly doing it to break the ice (and at one point, to implant a computer virus into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s network to find out what they're hiding from the Avengers), but he's also clearly reveling in his captive audience in order to show off and crack jokes nonstop.
** Loki also seems to delight in doing this. Tony's not amused when he realises the [[NotSoDifferent similarities]] between them.

-->'''Bruce Banner:''' I don't think we should be focusing on Loki. That guy's brain is a bag full of cats. You can smell crazy on him.\\
'''Thor:''' Have care how you speak. Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard and he is my brother. \\
'''Black Widow:''' He killed eighty people in two days.\\

'''Thor:''' He's adopted.

* DecoyDamsel: Black Widow's introduction scene. As JossWhedon commented, "This is [[SignatureStyle my entire career]] in one scene: ''Look, she's helpless! No, she's kicking their asses!''"

Added DiffLines:

* DefenceMechanismSuperpower: The Hulk in takes this a step further, emerging not only when Banner is angry enough, but whenever his life is significantly threatened. As Banner learned the hard way, this includes [[DrivenToSuicide self-inflicted injury]].

Added DiffLines:

* {{Deprogram}}: Black Widow mentions that Hawkeye was in charge of deprogramming her. She later returns the favor by [[spoiler: helping him break free of Loki's brainwashing.]]

Added DiffLines:

* DropShip: The Chitauri ground troops were transported to Earth by Leviathans which combine this trope with LivingShip.

* ChairReveal: Played with. During the mid-credits sequence that reveals [[spoiler:Thanos]] as the GreaterScopeVillain, rather than turning around in a spinning chair, he gets up and looks over his shoulder.

* ChestBlaster: After getting supercharged by a lightning bolt from Thor, Iron Man uses this in conjuction with a double repulsor attack to blast Thor in retaliation.

* CombinationAttack: Iron Man shoots his laser at Cap's shield which he uses to reflect the laser into the Chitauri.

* ConvenientlyEmptyBuilding: The climactic Battle of New York takes place all around the downtown area. On a few occasions we see Hulk rampage through occupied buildings, but the flying Leviathan creatures seem to crash through empty buildings, one brought down personally by Hulk and Thor.

* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: Loki has these, especially notable in his first scene, to empathise his BigBadSlippage between ''Thor'' and ''The Avengers''. Completed with a KubrickStare.

* CulturalTranslation: The Castillian Spanish dub pulls a few with Tony's pop culture references. Instead of "Film/ReindeerGames", he calls Loki "Film/{{Bambi}}'s dad", and simply "rock star" instead of "Theatre/RockOfAges". His reference to Bodhi when talking with Thor is also omitted.

** Tony Stark at one point refers to the fact that Steve Rogers alias Captain America has been frozen for 70 years by calling him a "Capcicle", a pun on the superhero's name and either icicle or Popsicle (an American brand of ice pop that has become a generalized trademark). It seems that the creators of the German dub have chosen the latter interpretation, even though this brand is unknown in Germany. So, Tony calls Steve "Captain/Käptín Iglo" in the dub instead, after the mascot of a brand of frozen food. This even serves as yet another one of those [[PopculturalOsmosisFailure pop-culture references which are going straight over Steve's head]], due to to Käpt'n Iglo having been introduced as late as 1985, as opposed to Popsicles, which have been existing by that name since TheTwenties.

Added DiffLines:

* BallroomBlitz: Loki disrupts a very formal party in Germany in order to use one of the guests' eyeballs to allow the corrupted Barton to break in and steal something.

Added DiffLines:

* BeautifulDreamer: Played for laughs rather than for romance, when Captain America hears the following from his biggest fanboy, Agent Coulson:
-->'''Coulson:''' I watched you while you were sleeping. ({{beat}}) I mean, I was present when you were unconscious from the ice.

Added DiffLines:

* BehindTheBlack: Hulk's hilarious [[spoiler:smack-down of Loki involves this: Loki is looking straight at the Hulk as the latter begins his 'AGodIAm' speech. There is enough distance between them that Loki would be able to see the Hulk's whole figure (so Hulk couldn't make any move without it being seen). But Loki is the only one in shot, and doesn't react until Hulk has already snatched his feet from under him mid-sentence so he can can whip him around like a ragdoll.]]

Added DiffLines:

* BigBadWannabe: Loki is this, too. Oh sure, he's got the Chitauri backing him up and he puts on a big show, but in the end he's nothing more than a self-absorbed pawn to [[spoiler:Thanos]]. In the EvilPlan, Loki will get Earth, but [[spoiler:Thanos will get the Infinity Gems and pretty much the whole universe.]]

Added DiffLines:

* BladeOnAStick: Loki gets one from the Chitauri. But it has other powers besides stabbing, such as [[FrickinLaserBeams shooting energy bolts]] and mind control.

Added DiffLines:

* BorrowedBiometricBypass: In The Avengers (2012), Loki and his minions use a fancy piece of stolen S.H.I.E.L.D. tech that lets them scan someone's eye and turn it into a hologram good enough to fool a retina scanner. Loki probably didn't ''have'' to [[EyeScream jam it right into the poor man's eye socket though]]...

Added DiffLines:

* BrawlerLock: Iron-Man throws two punches at Thor but he catches them and starts slowly crushing his gauntlets. Tony stops the lock by using his PowerPalms and headbutting the demigod. Unfortunately, Thor returns the favor.

* AerialCanyonChase: Iron Man takes out many of the invading flying charioteers by getting them to chase him through the streets of New York after Hawkeye notes that they aren't as maneuverable as he is.

Added DiffLines:

* AlphaStrike: The Chitauri eventually resort to this when fighting the Hulk, surrounding him and swamping him with laser fire. It's the first thing in the battle that even slows him down.

Added DiffLines:

* AnswerCut: Loki has just brainwashed S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, claimed the Tesseract, and escaped. Agent Coulson asks "What do we do now?" Nick Fury doesn't have an answer, but cue title card: The Avengers. Made even cooler in the UK release as the title there is "Avengers Assemble."

Added DiffLines:

* ArrowCam: The camera follows the arrow that Hawkeye shoots at Loki.

* ContinuityNod: Quite a few.
** Black Widow mentions to Coulson that Stark doesn't trust her after finding out she's a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in ''Iron Man 2''.
** We get clips from previous films either as FlashBack or as raw footage, especially when it comes to Captain America.
** Pepper Potts' previous meetings with Coulson are referenced.
** When inspecting the hologram of the Tesseract at Stark Tower, Tony gets a look on his face that says: "Wait a minute, I know this! This cube was in my father's journal..."
** Banner mentions nearly destroying Harlem, referencing the Hulk's fight against the Abomination at the end of ''The Incredible Hulk''.
** Banner also mentions that at one point he [[spoiler:tried to kill himself, but the "other guy" spat out the bullet]]. This was shown in the alternative opening to ''The Incredible Hulk''.
** Banner's remark about putting ''him'' in a pressurized tube underwater is the same quip he made to Betty about not taking the subway in ''The Incredible Hulk''.
** Iron Man refers to the new suit as Mark VII, indicating past armors. He also uses the lasers from ''Iron Man 2'', and they're still apparently one-offs until he upgrades to the Mark VII suit, which has them on auto-reloading clips.
** Practically every plot element of ''Thor'' was mentioned throughout the movie.
** Tony still doesn't like to be handed things.
** Tony mentions that his father knew Captain America. Who found the Tesseract while searching for the Captain?
** Insulting Thor to his back is still not a good idea.
** Black Widow makes an allusion to Tony's talk with General Ross in ''The Incredible Hulk''.
** [[Creator/NataliePortman Jane Foster]] is explained as being transferred to a distant place to protect her from Loki. Her actress was very pregnant at the time of production.
** The gun Coulson uses on Loki was reverse-engineered from the Destroyer in ''Thor''.
** The Hulk can't lift Mjölnir because he isn't worthy.
** Captain America, when first meeting Loki in Germany, notes that the last time he went to that location, he also had to deal with someone who believed he was higher than everyone else, referring to either Red Skull or Hitler.
** Cap says that Loki's scepter may run on magic, but it looks like HYDRA technology. Thor stated the reason in his own movie: Asgardian technology is so far advanced beyond current human tech that it is indistinguishable from magic to Midgardians.
** Cap destroyed a punching bag when Fury walked in at the end of his movie. When Fury walks in on him in this movie, he's working a punching bag and knocks it off its chain, though he doesn't destroy it. When he's walking out, he picks up a punching bag from a row of them he has on the floor.
** Tony's line about bringing "the party to you" is a callback to a line Natasha says to Tony in ''Iron Man 2'' when the Hammer drones attack.
** Loki uses it as a taunt when he traps Thor with an illusion trick.
--->'''Loki:''' Are you ever ''not'' going to fall for that?
** The conversation Thor and Loki have just before trading blows in the climax mirrors the one Odin and Laufey had after Thor's destruction of Jotunheim.
** A very subtle one, but a lot of Tony's dialogue while [[spoiler:mourning over Phil Coulson]] reflects Yinsen's death in the first ''Iron Man'' movie.
** The beam of light generated by Selvig's portal device resembles the beam created by both the Bifrost in ''Thor'' and the overloading Arc Reactor in ''Iron Man''. The generator itself incorporated design elements from both the Bifrost (where the beam emerges) and the Arc Reactor (the coil surrounding the iridium).
** Colonel Fury makes a note of how wars are won by soldiers, not weapons, to the council. Colonel Philips makes a similar statement (Quoting Patton) in ''Captain America''.
** When Tony is encouraging Bruce to view The Hulk not as a curse, but as a gift, he references the initial chest injury he suffered in the first ''Iron Man'' movie. He also mentions the levels of gamma radiation Banner was exposed to should well have killed him, but he survived for a reason. This is also a CallBack to how Tony viewed his own survival of the attack in Afghanistan.
