** Belzer’s motivations for keeping his sons prisoner is also pretty sad. [[OverprotectiveDad He just wanted to protect his two remaining sons from being kidnapped by Manberg like his other children.]]

* Kat’s backstory. Her parents died when she was a little girl, and then she was put through hell by the foster care system, and was jailed for standing up to her bully. {{SourOutsideSadInside Behind her standoffish and rude behavior is just a teenage girl trying to bear the weight of unimaginable traumas & self-loathing.}}

* While Wendell and Wild can be [[Jerkass Jerkasses]], it’s hard not to feel some sympathy for them. They’ve spent a good chunk of their lives enslaved by their father, and just wanted to build their Dream Faire.

** Her parents death is especially devastating. When Kat screamed, her father was distracted and ended up driving off the bridge. Her parents drowned, and Kat spends most of the film blaming herself for their deaths.

And to add insult to injury, because the cream’s effects were only temporary, Kat watched her parents die twice.

*Father Best’s funeral, with all the students crying. Even after being revived, he’s scammed by the Klaxons. He never stayed long enough to see his school saved.

*Sister Helley’s backstory. Manberg exploited her abilities as a Hell Maiden so he could capture demons. She spends the entire movie trying to prevent Kat from suffering a similar fate.
