* For fans of the New California Republic, the fall of the once-thriving nation state and first major civilization to emerge from the wasteland is not because of their over-expansion or exhaustion after fighting two major wars back to back, but because of the largest act of domestic violence in the history of the world.

* "[[ArmorPiercingQuestion How do you live like this?]] ''[[ArmorPiercingQuestion Why keep going?]]''"; Lucy's disgusted and upset question as The Ghoul butchers Roger immediately after killing him, [[HumanResources for his teeth to sell]] [[IAmAHumanitarian and his meat to eat]], and then has the audacity to ''crack a joke'' suggesting her Father was likely [[NotSoDifferentRemark Not So Different]] when famine struck their vault. It's armor-piercing enough that it actually gives The Ghoul pause, and for a brief moment he seems ''all too aware'' of [[WhatHaveIBecome what he's become]]. Uncomfortable with how shaken that question made him, and ''tellingly'' unable to come up with a good rebuttal for it, he responds by taking it out on her, making ''her'' do the butchering in his stead.

** For Lucy, she learns from Moldaver that her father was complicit in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocents in Shady Sands for no other reason than petty jealousy that his wife escaped to a prosperous civilization and took Lucy with her. Hank doesn't even deny it after the jig is up, even saying that her mother ''deserved to die'' for taking Lucy away from him. Lucy spends most of the finale looking as if she's about to burst into tears and can barely explain herself to Maximus when he comes rushing in.

In addition, she finally finds out what happened to her mother. [[AndIMustScream What's left of her, anyway.]]

** For the Ghoul, back when he was Cooper Howard, he listens in on a meeting between Vault-Tec and numerous other business conglomerates as they start divvying up the post-war world for their own gain. He even hears his beloved wife advocating for nuclear genocide against the world in order to speed up the process of Vault-Tec taking over, when he still hoped she could be a moderate voice among the executives. He's left barely functioning when Betty introduces Cooper to Hank.
* Lucy's memory is finally clarified, and she realizes ''she'' was in Shady Sands with her mother and brother - the town had food, power, even mass transit, and while the scars of the Great War still remained, Shady Sands was a place where she, Norman, Rose, and Moldaver could live happily in peace... [[YankTheDogsChain and Hank destroyed that all out of petty jealousy]].

Hank. All of this makes Cooper's FallenOnHardTimesJob at the start of the season even harsher in hindsight, as learning the truth not only cost him his marriage and his career, but he has to entertain at those parties while knowing his world is going to die and ''there's nothing he can do about it''.
