* Finding out that [[spoiler: Andrew's mom, the one person he seemed to be genuinely stable and happy around, died]] is very heart-wrenching.
** Add on to this that [[spoiler: one of the last things Andrew does in his home is comfort his mother's labored breathing.]]
* Seeing [[spoiler: Matt futilely try to calm down Andrew, who is losing control of his powers and going berserk, and get the police to back off]]. Anyone with even a little GenreSavvy knows what's going to happen next: [[spoiler: Matt's forced to kill Andrew.]]
** What really makes the moment is that [[spoiler: Matt is crying and screaming at him to stop and he's obviously in complete despair over what he knows he has to do. After the deed is done, he just collapses into a sobbing wreck. He really did love Andrew.]]
* [[spoiler:Steve's death. He's trying to talk Andrew down and claiming he's his best friend, but Andrew, long since past the DespairEventHorizon thanks to his dad, keeps pushing him away until he unintentionally kills him.]]
** While it is left up in the air [[spoiler:just how much of the lightning strike was Andrew's fault.]]
** Given that [[spoiler:electricity seems to be a weakness for them, what with Andrew knocking himself out when he hits a streetlight, it is indeed doubtful he killed Steve. He's probably just guilty because Steve only flew up into the storm to talk Andrew to get down.]]
** It's less [[spoiler:electricity is their weakness and more that the boys have to be aware of what's coming at them in order to shrug it off with their psionic barriers (see: Steve getting knocked out by the plane when the boys are flying, Andrew's impalement at the end during his feral screaming bout).]] It was {{ambiguous|Situation}}, to say the very least. Nevertheless, [[spoiler:it does hit Andrew badly, judging by his apology of sorts at Steve's grave.]]
** It becomes more tragic when you take into account that Andrew tended to confide more in Steve than he did with Matt. Steve was the only person he really opened up to. Likewise, [[spoiler:in the director's cut Steve tells Andrew about his troubles with his own parents that he doesn't want anyone else to know about]]. Given how close they became, it was very heart wrenching to see Andrew push Steve away [[spoiler:then accidentally kill him]]. Especially since he most likely didn't mean it when he said Steve wasn't really his friend and was probably just lashing out in anger due his father's abuse and lingering words, since [[spoiler: he tearfully (we don't see his face, but he sounds tearful) says at Steve's grave that he misses him and is very sorry for killing him]].
* Andrew's [[spoiler:descent into insanity]], the Apex Predator speech being just before the point of no return, to tie in on the above, with [[spoiler: Richard's and Andrew's hospital scene being that point.]]

* The smashing of the HopeSpot when Andrew's father is in tears [[spoiler: besides his hospitalized son, only to reveal he's crying because his mother is dead and now proceeds to blame his son for it.]]

* Of course, Matt ends up having it rough as well. He starts off having trouble using his powers, then tries to set up some rules about using them just when it begins to all get out of hand. [[spoiler: Of course, it only ended up working for him. All the above events (many of which he wasn't aware of) end up resulting him having no choice but to fight and kill his cousin, both of them causing some damage to Seattle in the process, and now he's pretty much on the run since they were both found to be equally dangerous. The last time he had a normal life was with Casey at a children's birthday party before an emergency broadcast reports an disaster at the hospital. At least he's content with traveling the world to find out how this all even happened to begin with.]]

* Let it be said that Andrew's entire existence in this movie is just sad. So much what if about what he could have been if only he had even a snowball's chance in hell for a good life before the events of the movie.
