* As with any [[LegacyCharacter Next Avatar]] story, the previous Avatar must be gone to accommodate their successor, meaning Korra is gone, outside of spiritual visits. Likewise, most of the previous cast are either ancient or gone, with Bolin's appearance as an older gentleman a prime example of this.
* The death of Rohan, who unfortunately is not able to be mourned or even given proper burial by the new Team Avatar because they are on the run.
* Despite renewal efforts, there is still a place in Laoling called Kuviraville where the poor and homeless congregate. Sad to see the Great Uniter's legacy become so depressing.
* The mysterious ''Third'' turns out to be [[spoiler:Baatar the Third, son of Baatar Jr, and ''Kuvira'']]. He understandably has issues to work out with the Avatar. Yet again the legacy of the previous Avatar impacts upon their successor.

* Bolin and several of the Beifong’s (Opal, Wei and Wing) visit the impact sight of Sozin’s Comet... the town of Gaoling, where Toph and the Beifong bloodline came from. It's utterly destroyed. Even though none of them had been born there, they felt a connection to it thanks to their family line, and it's now gone. The sorrow is palpable.
* Victims of the bending thief, their bending stolen, their life force reduced to almost nothing, they seem to have aged centuries in the blink of an eye, and they’re barely conscious afterwards. [[spoiler:Thankfully, there’s no lasting damage once Temuji is defeated, but it's still unpleasant to behold]].
* With Pema’s life in danger, Tenzin snaps at his son Meelo when he doesn’t obey his instructions. He regrets it immediately afterwards, but you can tell the words hurt all of them.
* The passing of [[spoiler:Lin Beifong, who died as she lived, in the line of duty. It doesn’t help she’s choking on her own blood and unable to quite get out her [[FamousLastWords last words]] to Mako]].
* Temuji’s unnamed mother passing away in flashback. Temuji’s raw, emotional grief is palpable, and because he’s just starting to develop his firebending, his tears evaporate away and no one is able to come close to comfort him because he’s radiating too much heat.
* During her brief scene out of her cell,[[spoiler:Kuvira]] remarks she has nowhere else to go and no one who would possibly help her even if she did, feeling alienated and alone since [[spoiler:the fall of her Colossus]]. She practically welcomes the idea of returning to her cell simply because it’s a comforting familiarity and stability.
* And another death scene, this time for [[spoiler:Temuji]]. It’s slightly mitigated by the fact that they finally seems to be at peace, but even that fact is ruined by [[spoiler:Fumiko]]’s reaction to it, like their whole world has just come crashing down.
* [[spoiler:Fumiko]]’s own fate is nothing pleasant either, being [[spoiler:locked up in Ghazan’s old Red Lotus prison for the remainder of her life]], seemingly having lost the will to live.
