The books had many gameplay elements, such as [[CharacterAlignment Character Alignment]], where you could be a "principled" player who would never accept stolen property, or a "miscreant" who is willing to kill innocent bystanders. The game was meant so the players could get involved in the setting and universe, and would even have ways that your character would go through some type of trauma, such as [[DemonicPossession possession]], [[ColdBloodedTorture torture]], or [[NearDeathExperience near death experiences]]. It even had ''sexual'' orientations, and one of the above traumas could lead to a [[EasySexChange change in sexual orientations]].
