** Most {{Police Procedural}}s end with the culprit being captured at the end of the episode, but here a good portion of episodes end with the killer going free because there isn't enough evidence to convict them. It's most notable in Season 1, where the NewMeat Bayliss is tasked with capturing the culprit of a high profile murder. In most shows, Bayliss would rise up against the odds and find the killer. Instead, he doesn't find enough evidence, partially because he didn't secure the crime scene properly, and his primary suspect refuses to confess and goes free. It's even left ambiguous if the suspect committed the crime, or was just an innocent man.

** "[[Recap/HomicideLifeOnTheStreetS6E7Subway Subway]]":
*** Lewis and Falsone are unable to find Lange's girlfriend in the park because it's simply too much ground for them to successfully cover. Where in most shows Lange and his girlfriend would have a touching goodbye, here the final shot is her jogging obliviously past the train station he died in,
*** Biedron's efforts to hide his past fall apart the second Bayliss starts investigating his background.
*** It's made abundantly clear from the start that Lange is going to die and there is nothing that can be done to save him, only to find out who did it. There are no last-minute rescues or miracles. As soon as he's released, he dies almost instantly.
*** Lange's killer isn't a sociopath or someone with a grudge against him but a normal man who shoved Lange for no reason and barely seems to understand the gravity of doing so or why he's been arrested. Many killers in real life aren't motivated by passion or greed but flimsy reasons even they don't fully understand and many victims die for no other reason than they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

** Throughout the series as a whole, it's shown (her best friend Ann point blank says it) Leslie is depicted as a "steamroller" someone who only hears what she wants to hear, and ignores any criticism. At one point, she is narrowly elected to the City Council -- she wins by a single digit quantity of votes. She immediately goes about fighting for what she believes in (very loudly), pushing legislation she believes in, and ignores criticism from the townspeople, claiming she "knows better". She constantly fought her fellow council members and ignored voters. This is all very fun and charming for viewers, who, of course, are already rooting for Leslie. But she ends up getting recalled after a well-funded campaign targets her as a result of her actions. The fact is, in politics, you have to make allies and get along with your constituents. If you believe so strongly in your beliefs that you push forward in the face of extreme resistance from powerful special interests and advocate for legislation that is wildly unpopular with voters, that's fine, but there are going to be consequences -- no politician can survive long while living on the wrong side of public opinion. Ron even reveals to Leslie that he tried to have her fired ''four times'' because she either ignored his orders or went behind his back to do whatever she wanted. Although Leslie is [[HypercompetentSidekick highly competent in her field]], Ron was still her boss and Leslie's actions were textbook insubordination.

At one point, she is NARROWLY elected to the City Council. She IMMEDIATELY goes about fighting for what she believes in (very loudly), pushing legislation she believes in, and ignores criticism from the townspeople, claiming she "knows better". She constantly fought her fellow council members and ignored voters. In any other show, her legislation would be a success and the people would thank her? Nope. What happens? She gets recalled. The fact is, in politics, you have to make allies and get along with your constituents, and, shockingly, LISTEN TO VOTERS!

The odds of male to female HIV transmission by vaginal sex is 0.08% per sex act. This means they would have had to have sex over 1250 times for there to be a better than 50% chance of her being infected.

** Teenagers Robin Scorpio and Stone Cates consummate their relationship. However, Stone is soon diagnosed with AIDS. Despite pleas from viewers, Robin also tests positive for HIV. Writers understood the ramifications of having a legendary, beloved character who the viewers had watched grow up have a potentially fatal disease, but any other diagnosis would have been irresponsible and unrealistic--Robin and Stone had unprotected sex numerous times (she was a virgin, he had previously tested negative, so they were only using the Pill for contraception). The odds of her not contracting HIV were unlikely.

** In one episode, Elliot goes undercover as a crooked CBP agent to infiltrate a ring of rare animal smugglers. The smugglers are shown to be incredibly paranoid, and when they "recruit" Stabler they make him wear a watch with a tracking device and live in a housing unit they own so they can monitor him, because they're obviously not going to immediately trust this guy they just met. Olivia sneaks in to speak with him and when the crooks show up without warning she pretends to be a prostitute to throw them off the scent. They seemingly get away with it, but Elliot's handlers then take him on a drive and shoot him in the chest, because he's proven himself a security risk by having a girl over when he was explicitly told not to contact anyone. He only survives because he has a bulletproof vest on under his clothes.

* ''Series/StarTrekDiscovery'':
** It turns out that when you take an emotionally traumatized human child who's just seen her parents murdered by Klingons, and then have her raised by Vulcans who suppress all emotions, it leaves her completely incapable of processing emotions in a healthy way, and prone to irrational behavior when Klingons suddenly appear.
** Similarly, modifying a person of one species to be able to flawlessly impersonate a member of another, even to medical scans, is depicted as highly damaging to the person and very much non-reversible, accounting for why less invasive cosmetic methods are used in series set later.
** Despite the amazing potential of the spore drive, its continued use would require repeated genetic engineering of sentient beings, something that Starfleet and the Federation are highly biased against. Rather than using it as a learning moment to move past their biases, they choose to cover up the existence of the drive and look for other technologies.
* ''Series/StarTrekPicard'':
** In the series premiere, Picard goes off on live television about Starfleet's failure to follow through on rescuing the Romulans from the supernova of their star. When a couple days later he goes to Starfleet Command to ask that they give him a ship for a personal mission, he gets called out for "sheer fucking hubris" and reminded that Starfleet had problems both logistical and political that made continuing the rescue effectively impossible.
