* At the beginning of Film/Alien 3, the Sulaco launches an escape pod that lands on a planet. Newt and Hicks are both killed in gruesome ways (the gory aftermath is shown), and Bishop has one scene in which he asks to be turned off. The Comic Canon (quite a lot of which was written before 3) sees Hicks and Newt survive, and quite a few fans consider it superior for that reason.

** Interestingly enough, Vanessa was meant to continue to be alongside Austin in the plan for the second film, but Elizabeth Hurley was having scheduling issues meant that this happened.

* Film/2012:
** The Other is ComicBook/Thanos' right hand man, who serves as both a communication between Loki and Thanos, and as a way of hiding Thanos' identity from the audience until TheStinger. In Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy, he shows up just long enough to be killed by Ronan the Accuser.
** Phil Coulson had been in three previous movies and featured in the MarvelOneShots. His actor even got suspicious that he would die once the director (who has a track record for AnyoneCanDie shows) called him and said Coulson was "TheHeart that unites the superheroes" - which eventually translated to "Loki killing Coulson would propel the Avengers to assemble and fight together". And even if Coulson wound up returning in Series/AgentsOfShield, the fact that he is BackFromTheDead is a huge plot point there. Coulson's revival will apparently never be mentioned in future MCU films.
* Brock Rumlow acts as a recurring villain in Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier working for and survives the movie's events. He returns in Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar, now operating under his more familiar identity from the comics known as Crossbones, for the opening battle and [[spoiler:dies trying to use a bomb to take Cap with him by the end of the scene.]]

* A very straight example of this trope is the Bourne Supremacy. Marie, Jason's love interest and a main character in The Bourne Identity, is quickly dispatched during the opening chase.
