** The wide beam setting on the hand phaser would have ended two thirds of every firefight we've ever seen on this show immediately if the characters actually bothered to use it. In ''Deep Space Nine'' when gunfights became more common they conveniently forgot that they even had a beam setting at all.

In ''Deep Space Nine'' when gunfights became more common they conveniently forgot that they even had a beam setting at all. This is taken to an even more ludicrous extent in [[Recap/StarTrekS2E17APieceOfTheAction A Piece of the Action]] where we learn that the ''Enterprise'' itself not only has a wide-beam setting but also a ''stun setting'' allowing it to harmlessly incapacitate a whole group of enemies from orbit. There is literally no reason why every outdoor firefight does not end this way.

* ''Series/TheBoys'': a handful of evil superhumans have SuperSpeed in a setting where such an ability is extremely rare and the heroes are BadassNormal types or fairly modestly-powered street level supers who rely on evasion and ambush tactics. These few characters are very hard to write around, so there's always some excuse for why they don't just use it to instantly win every time the Boys are on the same city block as them.
