The original Mobile Suit Gundam was actually kept afloat with female viewership. The toys MGS was supposed to advertise didn't come around until after the show's cancellation. Female fans were more in it for the story and characters and not toys, so there were many who stuck around from the beginning. CLAMP is actually one such group of female fans. To say that Gundam ONLY got female fans after Wing is a bit of a disservice.
