Added DiffLines:

* ArtisticLicenseLaw: Very little due process is shown in how a school can actually be run. A Principal does not have nearly as much authority to dismiss students, fire staff, etc. that Neil and Lee routinely do throughout the series.

Added DiffLines:

* Cassandra: Dayshawn seems to be able to see right through Gamby.

Added DiffLines:

* ClingyJealousGirl: Jen Abbott grows stronger and stronger into this role as the series goes.

Added DiffLines:

* EarnYourHappyEnding: Gamby is extremely undeserving of audience sympathy, romantic love, or the principal position. He is horrible to most people trying to support him like his wife's new husband Ray, hands out punishments in a thoughtless and inconsistent manner, and he even pressures students to do his bidding. He gradually learns to appreciate his support circle better, and truly advocate for his teachers and the school.
[[spoiler: He wins the girl of his dreams, earns the respect of his daugther, greater mental peace and becomes principal of a school.]]

Added DiffLines:

* Flanderization: Jen Abbott goes from being quirky to desperate and [[spoiler: ax-crazy.]]

Added DiffLines:

* HoYay: Gamby and Russell play around with this trope as they approach the series finale.

Added DiffLines:

* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Regina Deets has more of a Southern accent in the pilot and a Mid-Atlantic accent in later episodes

Added DiffLines:

* StereotypeFlip: Christine seems like a traditional East Asian submissive wife for the entire first season. It's not even revealed until the second season that she's the breadwinner in the family and a doctor. Additionally, she shows she is capable of standing up for herself and getting angry when lied to.

He's a good worker, supportive and friendly all the time to Neal even though Neal doesn't really deserve it, going so far to hook him up with a school lunch so he can sit at the teacher's table, or offering comfort to Neal when he thinks he's been jilted by Lee.

* TheCobblersChildrenHaveNoShoes: Subverted and deconstructed with Belinda Brown is highly respected, well-educated Doctor of Education who is brought in as principal with great fanfare and high expectations, but her own home is a mess. She's married to a deadbeat, philandering husband and has two disrespectful, delinquent sons over whom she has no control without threats of beating their asses when they misbehave.

* PositiveDiscrimination: Subverted and deconstructed with Belinda Brown. She's a highly respected, well-educated, progressive, liberal black Doctor of Education who is obviously brought on board to show the small town, backwards thinking white men how to educate the children. But Belinda is married to a deadbeat, philandering husband and has two disrespectful, delinquent sons over whom she has no control without threats of beating their asses when they misbehave, transforming into a stereotypical ScaryBlackWoman when pushed to the limit. Belinda is deeply frustrated and embarrassed with her family situation, having moved to South Carolina purely to try and give her sons a better life, but they want nothing more than to go back to Philadelphia. Furthermore, it's hinted that she and Gamby actually share a measure of respect for each other, and might actually have been able to develop a good working relationship had Gamby not felt passed over in getting the promotion to Principal.

* UnfortunateImplications: Hammered at by a lot of websites that reviewed the pilot and the second episode; mainly that the show revolves around two different middle age, Southern men trying to ruin the life of a successful African-American out of jealousy over her getting a promotion instead of the two men. The show attempts to counter this by having Lee Russell be married to an Asian woman and Neal Gamby clearly conflicted as he gets to know Belinda better (along with the fact that the show goes out of it's way to avoid having them bring up Belinda being black).
