* DownerEnding: A completely downer ending is rare, but each episode usually has one person succeding, and the other failing with whatever the subject matter is. There are a few examples of such downers, such as...
** In the "I'm An Alcoholic", one of the girls, who is only 21, is a severe alcoholic, and admits to being drunk for a week straight. In the end, she is offered help in a variety of ways from every single friend of hers, and even goes to AA. By the end of the episode, she moves out from her friend who has been trying to help her majorly, and goes back to hard drinking. The end of the episode has her living in squalor, drinking mouthwash because his effects have enough money for alcohol, all after she quit AA because they "wouldn't let [her] live her life". Given that the other alcoholic being followed had her entire family absent throughout her whole ordeal, and went through it almost completely on her own succeeded in becoming sober, it's incredibly depressing at how hard the 21 year old has fallen.
** An episode involving smoking has a woman ,who has smoked to the point of lung cancer, caring for her two young children on her own after her husband died. The end of the episode reveals she died of lung cancer shortly after the taping, leaving her children as orphans.
* An episode about crystal meth addiction has one of the people being followed declining any help, an later overdoses, leaving behind her entire family thy worked hard to help them throughout the episode.

* SuddenDownerEnding: The episode "I Don't Trust My Partner" ends on an unexpectedly depressing note with the second couple, Shawny and Nikki. After the couple seemed to have improved their troubled relationship and moved into an apartment they picked out together, mere months later, Shawny suddenly died from a hernia issue, in his early twenties. Nikki went into a period of deep mourning and eventually looked to Christianity for comfort. For a series that hardly travels beyond a BittersweetEnding, that was a punch to the gut.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotHeinous: Played with on the episode "I Am A Sex Offender". On the one hand, a twenty-something male was shown going to court numerous times to get his sex offender stated repealed, because he had sex with a 17-year-old classmate when he was 18, and her mother reported him as a felon out of spite. [[DisproportionateRetribution Ouch.]] On the other hand, an older twenty-something male got his sex offender status repealed once already (he was previously convicted of sexually interacting with a 15 year old girl), and after messing with another underage teen girl, he had to attend court to get his status taken away again. By the episode's end, [[{{Irony}} the guy who didn't deserve the sex offender status]] [[{{Irony}} ''still'']] [[{{Irony}} didn't get the appeal he sought]], [[KarmaHoudini while the one who did deserve punishment managed to get rid of his status a second time]].
