* SouthernBelle: Subverted. William Reynold's wife is anything but faithful to him, and while her daughter by his brother seems sweet at first, she's ultimately shallow and self-centered enough to sell her "friend" Kizzy away for choosing a boy over her.

* {{Deconstruction}}: Was meant to be one of the old movies from the 30s and 40s that glorified the south and slavery, especially Film/GoneWithTheWind, by showing the audience '''exactly''' how horrible the whole system was. It was so successful, [[GenreKiller it killed off]] those kinds of movies entirely.

* BittersweetEnding: The Gift.
** Kunta and Fiddler help several other slaves escape, but there's no more room in the boat for both of them and they both elect to stay rather than let the other face their master's wrath for trying to escape. They are discovered, however, not by a slave hunter, but by an abolitionist who was their contact on the nascent Underground Railroad. He bribes the slave catcher to leave them alone, and makes sure that the pair are discovered in a situation and place where it looks like they were hiding on the plantation when the drama around the slave revolt and escapes were happening. The abolitionist has also seemingly begun to shape his young niece to at least be sympathetic to the slaves' plights.
