* LastNameBasis: Pretty much everyone calls Houston by his last name. The only person who doesn't is Houston's Uncle Roy (Creator/BuddyEbsen), who joined the cast in the last season. Uncle Roy calls him by his real first name, Matlock.

-------------
* CharacterTitle: '''Matt Houston'''.
* FriendOnTheForce: Lt. Novelli in the first season and Lt. Hoyt for the rest of the series.
* HowUnscientific: One episode in which a faked alien abduction was somehow involved in a crime that Matt is investigating. Then, at about the 3/4 mark of the episode, Houston, driving by himself, is actually abducted by the stereotypical little gray buggers. He doesn't remember it happening, there's not witnesses, and it has no effect whatsoever on the plot of the episode, and is never mentioned again.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: One episode had a sporting-goods magnate hunting athletes in this manner.
* RealAfterAll: Matt is abducted by real aliens in an episode where he's investigating a (fake) claim of abduction covering up a murder. Of course, he doesn't remember, no one else sees it, and the abduction has no relevance to the rest of the plot at all
