* SaltAndPepper: Derek and Michael hang out together a lot. Kathy and Tosha are classmates.

* LongRunner: The show has been running for 19 years (As of April 2011). While new episodes are not being produced (Notably, with owner company HIT Entertainment being sold to Mattel), new videos (often being [[ClipShow Clip Shows]]) are being released of the series. In addition, a 14th season was produced in 2010, consisting of reruns from the 10th and 11th seasons.

FiveTokenBand tends to happen with groups of five or more children.

* RearrangeTheSong: A notable example includes a lullaby version of "Everyone is Special," used to accomodate newborn twins.

* BeamMeUpScotty: Contrary to popular criticisms, a Barney fanatic or two debunked the rumor that Barney never said anything about strangers being "friends you never met." Instead, the very opposite was stated by Derek in the episode ''Playing It Safe'' (he said that they're not only people you don't know, but that "they could be bad people."), which led to a short TooSmartForStrangers moral using a play of Little Red Riding Hood and a song (in traditional Barney fashion) to reinforce the moral of not talking to them.

** MakingUseOfTheTwin: In their first appearance, Ashley and Alyssa are introduced one at a time and are mistaken for each other, before they show up together and explain themselves. They also team up for a MirrorRoutine in a talent show.

** ThemeTwinNaming: Tosha's twin brothers, Kevin and Kyle, as well as two school-age girls named Ashley and Alyssa.

** Baby Bop too has had this effect. She sounded much more infant-like in her early appearances, but by the third season, she began to sound more like a three year old.

* Trans Atlantic Equivalent: In addition to dubs, the show has had co-productions in Israel and South Korea, both mostly following the plots of the original American episodes.

** Tina's broken arm and Tosha's parents having a baby were refered to numerous times in Season 2, the latter being concluded in the season finale when it was revealed [[Spoiler:Tosha's mom had twin boys]].

* ClipShow: A number of Direct-To-Video episodes.

** Sheryl Leach did go on an interview once and outright stated that the only reason the show exists is to keep kids glued to the screen and nothing more. MoralGuardians were not pleased.
*** It could be argued she was referencing the early Barney and the Backyard Gang videos (which had less of an educational focus than the TV show). The TV show is clearly educational, however, complete with a Yale study proving the show's benefits on educating young children.

** ''We are Family'' for a 2005 controversial music video where Barney sings with SesameStreet characters, along with [[SpongebobSquarepants many]] [[BearInTheBigBlueHouse other]] [[WinnieThePooh characters]] and [[BillCosby celebrities]].

* SpecialEffectFailure: Apart from the disturbing eyelid mentioned below, there was also an attempt to animate a breakdancing Barney for the first usage of "Mr. Knickerbocker." The resulting sequence was loud, and had a low frame rate.
