* As if Ironwood hasn't passed the Moral Event Horizon by shooting down Oscar to his supposed death, this episode makes it clear that he's willing to do anything he can to keep Atlas away from Salem. When Councilman Sleet, a mere civilian politician with no training in Aura or combat, demands to know why he has declared martial law and halting the evacuation of Mantle, Ironwood walks up to him without a single word and shoots him dead. Oscar was right, Ironwood is as dangerous as Salem herself.

As Yang, Ren, Oscar, and Jaune clear Grimm out of the city, they prepare to battle an approaching pack of Sabyrs. To their surprise and confusion, the Grimm turn tail and run in apparent fear. As the four ponder what just happened, Oscar is suddenly attacked and separated from the others as a previously-unseen Grimm growls and pounces on him from out of nowhere. What follows is uncomfortably reminiscent of a wild animal attack as the audience is forced to watch the helpless Oscar kick feebly at the attacking Grimm - which bites, stomps, and throws him around repeatedly until his Aura breaks and he's knocked unconscious - all while Jaune, Ren, and Yang are powerless to help him.

* As soon as Salem appears from the Seer's remnants she shows that a good dose of BreakThemByTalking can be as devastating as the Grimm she commands. [[AC:A Night Off]]

* Tyrian's gleeful massacre of the citizens at Robyn's political rally. After Watts cuts off the lights, Tyrian begins the slaughter and the audience is treated to a frightening view of Tyrian making his way through a helpless crowd that is too slow, weak or blind in the darkness to react in time to save themselves. When the lights turn back on, the audience is immediately confronted by the sight of a room that is littered with blood-splattered corpses. It's the first time a massacre has been shown on-screen in the entire show, which increases the dramatic impact of
the scene.

[[AC:Gravity]]

* When Watts traps Ironwood's arm in a HardLight shield, it's because he assumes that no-one would ever destroy their arm to pull it out. When Ironwood first tries, the audience is treated to a close-up of his upper arm, stripped of flesh and smoking while accompanied by a sizzling sound. The moment he pulls his arm out of the shield occurs off-screen, but the audience can hear him grunting in pain and the sizzling of his skin continuing in a truly cringe-inducing way. His arm is revealed to be dangling uselessly at his side, smoking after having suffered third-degree burns that cover his entire arm from the bicep right to the tips of the fingers. Ironwood's determination to sacrifice whatever it takes to defeat Salem leaves the audience with an extremely dark, horrific vision of just what lengths Ironwood is capable of going to in the pursuit of his goal.

* Mimicking Emerald's illusion from the end of Volume 5, Salem swirls into existence from a black miasma that pours from a broken Seer, swelling into a much larger size than humanly possible to dominate Ironwood's office. After cementing Ironwood's paranoia, she calmly counters Ruby's defiance with a gentle taunt about her mother's death. Ruby's emotional collapse occurs to eerie, discordant sounds and twisted visions of a melancholic mother, while the power of her silver eyes crackles and spurts like a fried electrical circuit. The whole thing plays out like a scene from a horror show, with an extra layer of creepy dissonance caused by just how impassive Salem seems in the face of the emotional chaos she's just triggered.

[[AC:With Friends Like These]]

* Cinder's arrival at the Winter Maiden's room is announced by the entire room shaking. When Winter looks into the corridor, the audience see the corridor from her perspective. The emergency lighting is broken and on the fritz, creating only flashes that reveal multiple dead bodies and the sight of Cinder standing peacefully among the wreckage. The audience is effectively plunged into the role of the victim in a slasher film that watches, helpless to act, as the murderous psychopath casually strolls through their own carnage towards them.

[[AC:The Enemy of Trust]]

* The new look of Cinder's Grimm arm. Back in volume 5, it ended at the middle of her left bicep. Now the arm has advanced all the way up her shoulder, exposing all muscles that would normally be covered by skin. The arm can regenerate when cut, but the audience has to witness Cinder writhing and screaming in agony while it grows. The replacement arm has therefore evolved into BodyHorror at its finest.

* The last time we saw Cinder's Grimm arm, it ended at the middle of her left bicep. Now, it's grown all the way up to her shoulder and exposed all the muscles in it. And once Winter cuts it off, Cinder wails in shock....then starts screaming and flailing while a new arm quickly and painfully emerges from the stump, all on its own.

* Ironwood gets his arm trapped in a Hard Light barrier by Watts, and when he tries to pull it out, the skin sizzles and burns clean off. Ironwood doesn't let it stop him though, and pulls the entire arm through the barrier, flaying the skin off his entire arm just to get at Watts. And while most of the actual flaying occurs offscreen, the result is shown in full detail.

* Salem shows her more manipulative side using only her words. First by further cementing Ironwood's paranoia and annnouncing her intention to claim the relics, and then by driving Ruby to tears with a reminder of Summer Rose's death,

* After Salem's message concludes, Ironwood gets disturbingly calm, then announces his plan to have Winter claim the Maiden power by force and use the Staff to launch Atlas into the upper atmosphere. When Blake protests that he's leaving the thousands of people still trapped in Mantle to die, he calmly answers that yes, he is, with absolutely no remorse. And the Ace Ops all go along with it, with only Marrow showing any reluctance.

* During the entire volume we saw evidence of the flaws within Ironwood's methodology and the suffering it causes to the people of Mantle, as well as his trauma over the fall of Beacon. This episode brings both tendencies to a head, when a glass queen left by Cinder triggers Ironwood's trauma, swiftly destroying the all of the progress achieved during this volume and turning our heroes against each other.

* The things I foresee people having trouble with is the many scenes demonstrating the Police State of Atlas, as quite a lot of fans did have a reaction in line with the requirements (it sticks with you after you're done, dreading rewatches, having a hard time after the fact), because while it may not involve jumpscares or dripping blood, the fear is just as intense even if it's more subtle. The main problems are one, that it is going to resonate more with some people than others, depending on their experiences with arrest, kidnapping, propaganda, riots, police brutality, and all the attendant horrors of living in such a place, but I don't feel like "fear of a police state" counts as a phobia, and two, the horror is subtle by nature so it would be easy to mistake for Fridge Horror, even when the creators show the results of such a state onscreen. So I think we better get this settled and out of the way now before volume 8 arrives, because everything indicates that Atlas is going to decide even further into totalitarianism.
