What's the work?

Film/YoungFrankenstein is a hilarious comedy-horror directed by Creator/MelBrooks and basically doing for the genre what he just did to Western parodies in Film/BlazingSaddles. We follow Dr. Frederick "Freddie" Frankenstein (Fronk-en-steen) who despises comparisons to his "insane" grandfather Victor. He winds up inheriting the late Dr. Frankenstein's castle and takes up residence in the remote and (rightfully) superstitious village. After his curiosity is piqued by his grandfather's rare books, he quickly finds himself falling into the family's work and seeking to build his own "Adam".

Who is Freddie? What has he done?

A brilliant professor, surgeon and scientist in his own right, Freddie moves back to Transylvania where he's met with Igor (Eye-gor), grandson of Igor (Ee-gor), Victor's assistant. While becoming enamoured with his grandfather's work and seemingly guided to finding his hidden notes--by the mysterious Frau Blücher (horses neigh in terror) Frederick sets about collecting body parts and the brilliant historian Hans Delbrück's brain to make a great being, at one point hilariously having to hide a covered corpse from a police officer who winds up shaking the body's hand sticking through the tarp. Unfortunately, the moronic Igor fumbles, accidentally messily dropping Delbrück's brain and absentmindedly grabbing one marked abnormal ("Abby Normal").

The resulting monster is sweet but exceedingly dimwitted and afraid of fire, attacking Frankenstein when Igor lights a match and having to be sedated. After locking it back down, Blücher reveals Victor was her "boyfriend" and sets the beast free to roam the town, ever more mistrustful of Frankenstein for his lineage, much to his dismay. The monster is surprisingly friendly as he wanders aimlessly, getting bullied by a little girl before incidentally catapulting her via seesaw back into her bed where her worried parents think she was just sleeping and later being injured repeatedly by a welcoming but fumbling bind man he's lured in by Frankenstein's violin playing and sedated once more.

To finally right the wrongs with the creature he made Frederick determines to lock himself in a room with it and convince it it's loved and worthy of life. At first begging to be let out when the creature tries to attack him, Freddie steels himself and philosophically engages the monster, soothing its soul. With his creation at ease, Frederick takes it to show off to the scientific community and embraces his destiny as a Frankenstein, impressing his watchers with its mechanical skills, obedience to command and snazzy dance number it does with him... until it's frightened by the stage lights. Dumbfounded, the audience begin booing the duo, causing the monster to rage until it's hauled away by the police.

A smug officer tries to mock the creature in captivity but it breaks free and Frankenstein--having gathered his wits after a rejuvenating "discussion" with his attractive assistant Inga--is visited by his cold, aloof fiancé Elizabeth. The night as Elizabeth sleeps, she's taken away by the monster and finds herself smitten with him for his, erm... "enormous schwanzstucker". As the townspeople hunt for the sexually fulfilled monster, Frederick lures it back to his castle with his violin playing.

Proclaiming a connection of their minds is the only way to save the creature, Frederick has himself and the creature hooked up to a machine. The people break into his castle and destroy the contraption but it still manages to link the minds of the two: the creature awakens capable of speech and politely introduces himself formally to the townsfolk, commenting on his tormented existence and gratitude for finally being able to express himself. Impressed with its newfound intelligence, the leader of the rowdy citizens shakes the monster's hand as a sign of friendship.

Afterwards the monster marries Frederick's former fiancée Elizabeth while Freddie himself has tied the knot with Inga. The film ends with scenes of the two couples together, Inga asking if the monster gained intelligence from Freddie what did he get from it? Freddie gives a cheeky smile and indicates he's... gained some inches, much to Inga's delight.

Actions and personality?

Freddie is a whacky Mel Brooks protagonist who's a brilliant scientist introduced abusing a lab subject for his students to observe and later has Igor grave rob to put his beast together. He's got tons of morals despite this, not wanting the monster hurting the townsfolk even if his endeavors are ego driven, learns the monster's cues to catch it with the violin and manages to break through to a being hardly functional in thought to persuade it to practically become a Broadway act, only ruined by the moronic audience.

Mitigating factors?

He's got a silly breakdown following the seeming failure of bringing the monster to life but soon after he's quietly eating dinner with Igor and Inga, it's a blow but he comes back.

Second of all he's pants-pissingly terrified of the monster when it lunges for him while he's locked in the room but he develops past this, calming himself and the beast and by the end he's brave enough to undergo a dangerous experiment to save his creation.

Verdict?

Happy and hilarious pass, Ravok has a few more!

I'll be brief on this one since it's really just the difference at the end that gives him enough distinction to count. He's the same SympatheticMurderer traumatized by the war in Ishval we all know and love. Kimblee slaughtered his friends, big bro and took his arm before he woke up in the Rockbell's medical tent and killed them in his confusion. Hunting down the State Alchemists responsible for the genocide, Scar kills ten of them across the country before coming into conflict with the Elric brothers. He nearly gets the drop on them but gets interrupted by Mustang and co.; later is revealed to Winry as her parents' killer; strikes up an OddFriendship with the adorable May Chang and we get a divergence when Al uses May to track Scar back to their hideout.

In combat with Ed, Scar tricks him by seemingly using his common escape tactic to destroy the floor but when nabbed by Al reveals he set the whole building to collapse. Even though he fights well, the Elrics eventually overwhelm and restrain him. Winry arrives to treat his wounds despite her anger as she knows it's what her parents would want her to do. Fully expecting no forgiveness, Scar nevertheless apologizes for her parents' deaths and shows he means it when he saves her from a rampaging Gluttony.

From here on out he's pretty well become a straight AntiHero, helping use his brother's research notes to stop Father's plan, fighting and killing Wrath/Bradley and ending the trilogy set to help build a new Amestris.

Who is Constance Beauregard? What has she done?

Seemingly the proprietor of an occult bookstore Aunt Claudia visits to find a source detailing potential leads on Jerry's type of vampire to fight his sire Ed, Constance interrupts Claudia's trip to her shop by giving her a "complimentary" spray of her signature perfume... that makes the wearer follow her bidding. Also seducing basketball player Moves Wilson, Constance is revealed to the reader to be the head of a witch coven--inherited from her beloved mother--and plotting with the Legion of the Endless Night of vampires to revive Jerry.

After the potion wears off on Claudia, she makes her way to Peter's apartment and the group manage to have his scientist friend discover the perfume works like a mind control device. While Natalia doses off watching her aunt, she makes her way back to Constance's penthouse, where the ritual begins. As her mom chastises her for the new age witch ritual, Constance makes contact with Jerry's spirit... but the heroes manage to make their way in!

Sending her demonic minions after them, Charley tackles her out a window. Her coven loses their powers and her monsters disappear with her death but Moves has begun his transformation.

Edward Lee is Charley's estranged former best friend who's been tailing the vampire Jerry since his arrival in Los Vegas. A bullied but bright kid, Ed's friend Adam is murdered by Jerry when he catches him and when Adam is absent the next day at school, Ed blackmails Charley into helping him investigate. The two get into a squabble over Charley's newfound popularity and Ed heads home alone... running into Jerry and keeping the vampire at bay until Jerry seduces him with promises to make him feel accepted, causing Ed to put down his cross and accept vampirism.

Posing as a delivery boy at Peter Vincent's penthouse when Charley is hiding out there, Ed manipulates vampire rules and accepts the invitation. An extremely effective servant to his evil master, Ed both destroys Peter's elevator to prevent escape and uses his own presence to invite Jerry himself into the house. What's Scar doing this time?

Actions and personality?

It's Scar: he's philosophical, tragic, brilliant and tricky. Never been a problem here and isn't one now.

Mitigating factors?

Slight but he's got a new setup at the end to trick the brothers and his bit saving Winry and winning redemption is different.

Verdict?

Easy keep.

Who in Lin(g) Yao? What has he done?

The charming, roguish 12th Prince of Xing, Lin is met on a train by the Elrics where he happily steals Ed's food. Realizing they're alchemists when the train is hijacked by terrorists, Lin has Foo and Lanfun attack the brothers, trying to force them to give him the secrets of the PhilosophersStone even at the expense of preventing them from saving the train: even having Lanfun chuck bombs at Ed. He departs after Envy shows up, ecstatic at meeting an immortal and hurrying off to go and try to capture him.

Later revealing his backstory to Ed and Al, Lin explains he means to discover the secret of immortality and gain favor from his ailing father, the Emperor of Xing, before using the secrets he discovers to take the throne by force. Despite his harsh outlook, Lin cares greatly for his people and when his attempts to capture the Homunculi Gluttony are interrupted by the arrival of Gluttony's sibling Furher Bradley/Wrath, he makes a point of saving the injured Lanfun, disgusted with the apathy shown by Bradley along the way.

His plan to take the restrained Gluttony back to his father only failing when the enraged monster's hatred of Mustang--his sister Lust's killer--allows him to break free. Lin flees to gather up Ed, Al, Mustang and co. but the beast injures Mustang, who falls back alongside Hawkeye and Winry. Battling Envy and Gluttony with Ed, Lin, Ed and Envy wind up eaten by Gluttony, the film ending with Envy unveiling his true form inside Guttony's EldritchLocation stomach void.

As per the original, he's made a vessel for Greed in the last movie, persuades the rebellious Homunculus into helping stop Father and winds up with a Philosopher's Stone to take back to Xing.

Actions and personality?

It's Lin, he's chummy and fun even when being a jerk to Ed and a cunning swindler both in the mundane as well as devious plotting to usurp the throne from his father. He cares for his people but he's going to get power even if that means fighting the Elrics in the middle of a train robbery or outright planning a coup.

Mitigating factors?

Dude's a straight up GuileHero in the original but the few flairs above make him dark enough here.

Verdict?

Amusingly surprising keep.

Who is Regine? What has she done?

A mysterious, beautiful (seemingly) young woman who moves into Peter Vincent's apartment building, Regine enters Charley's life three years after the events of the first film, when his psychotherapist Dr. Harrison has finally convince our hero his memories of Jerry were the result of trauma from being attacked by a cultist serial killer posing as a vampire. As Charley and his new girlfriend Alex drive home from Peter's Regine uses her bat form to follow them and rests atop Charley's car, sending him visions as she plots to vamperize him.

Dispatching her underlings to deal with Alex herself, her moronic henchman Louie unfortunately becomes smitten with Alex and tries to woo her instead. Meanwhile, Regine makes a point of being seen with Charley's roommate Richie, looking at Charley through her apartment window as she bites into Richie's neck. When Peter and Charley go to investigate, she passes the whole thing off as part of an elaborate, horror-themed costume party and convinces Charley she's just an actress, though Peter catches her lack of reflection in a mirror. As Peter attempts to flee, Regine corners him, revealing she's Jerry's sister out for revenge and warns him her beef is with Charley and to stay out of her way.

As she isolates Peter, Regine also works on seducing Charley with her charms and vampiric hypnosis, using many opportunities to bite at a wound in his neck and beginning his transformation as part of her plan to make him an immortal as he becomes the very thing he hates for her to torment eternally. Peter fails to convince Charley of her true nature and she takes his spot on Fright Night, revitalizing the show to huge popularity and having him interned for looking insane as he tries to stab her to death on air.

Dr. Harrison arrives to keep Alex at bay while Regine keeps Peter in a mental hospital. The doctor reveals himself as one of her vampire servants and attempts to kill Alex (eventually killing himself politely in a hilarious scene after Alex fails to stake him properly) and manages to help Peter escape the hospital with the assistance of a randomly supportive patient who believes Peter's claims about the existence of vampires.

Heading to Regine's lair, they encounter a partially transformed Charley who nearly gives into Regine's demands for him to kill his friends after they meddled in her affairs one too many times. Barely snapping out of her control, Regine and her henchmen attack the heroes, the vampire leader shrieking in rage when her friends/underlings are killed and fighting fiercely even while alone. Changing from her monstrous form back to her usual, alluring one, Regine nearly seduces Charley to give into her until Peter manages to reflect sunlight via a mirror into the tunnel she's hiding in, burning her alive. From her wafer-lined coffin, Regine defiantly reaches a boney arm out to the sky before finally expiring.

Actions and personality?

Regine is a seductive manipulator and her actress' performance is one of the best things about this step down from the original masterpiece. She embodies VampiresAreSexGods just like her brother and masterfully sets about destroying Charley while having Peter declared insane and only an unforeseen SpannerInTheWorks can get Peter and Alex to her lair to try and stop her.

She plants Dr. Harrison exactly as needed and plays a fantastic game having Charley denounce his own beliefs in the supernatural while isolating him from anything that could prompt him back on her tail and has a cool charm with her theatrics set to trick her foe into thinking her a mere actress while subtly drawing him into her trap.

Mitigating factors?

What she's planning to do to Charley is soul-destroyingly awful but it's Fright Night and EvilIsOneBigHappyFamily is a thing. He took her beloved brother from her and even in her rage she keeps her focus on her enemy. Obviously she's a vampire who needs blood to survive but her body count is quite low and she's even willing to let Peter be brushed aside as long as she can take her revenge on Charley himself.

Verdict?

Pleased yes, great villain this one.

What's Jerry doing here?

The same AffablyEvil vampire we all know and love, he's killed in the first two issues which act as an abbreviated retelling of the 1985 classic. Come issue 16, however, the witch Constance Beauegard, at the behest of the Legion of Endless Night lead vampire Jacob Hinnault, seeks to resurrect the powerful progenitor who they believe will help them TakeOverTheWorld. Partially brought back through Constance's ritual even after her death, Jacob leads his followers to use the blood of virgin vampires to fully restore Jerry's soul. Further empowering Jerry via a resistance to daylight his scientists discovered, the two nearly kill all the heroes until Claudia--aunt of Charley's new girlfriend Natalia and vampire expert--exploits his weakness to count bird seed and the two are forced to flee.

in Jacob's villa, he lures Natalia (Jacob's daughter) and tries to have Jerry turn her. While Jacob is staked and killed, Jerry manages to escape and sets about restoring the Legion. As charming as ever, Jerry seduces a prostitute in Paris, Lili, turning her and making her his right-hand woman as the two set about feeding and turning more vampires to replenish the ranks.

Utterly unstoppable for the American Anti-Monster Society Claudia has tried to form, they're fortunately joined by Evil Ed, who wishes to settle accounts with his old foe. When Ed hunts him down, Jerry nearly overpowers and kills him and when the Anti-Monster Society comes, Jerry calls upon his now day walking followers lead by Lili and prepares to square off... unfortunately the very accident prone rookies' mistakes happen to wind up killing the vampires through amusing happenstance (ex.: tripping while holding up a stake one of Jerry's vampires falls on) and a downed Ed gets up to stake Jerry non-fatally. Jerry is forced to retreat with Lili and...

... the comic got canceled there, sorry guys!

Actions and personality?

Jerry's as great as ever even if he's absent for most of the work. From the moment of Jacob's death he's able to swiftly set about reviving the League and he's clever with luring in humans, unlike Jacob comes across as a BenevolentBoss to Lili and even pulls one over on the likewise sharp Ed to nearly kill him in the final chapter.

Mitigating factors?

He's subordinate to Jacob while the latter plans to turn the planet into a snack ground for vampires but he's largely just an underling, if a strong one at that point, he doesn't go about the "Puny humans" thing like Jacob and the main thing again is he cares for his followers, while Jacob will kill them at the drop of a hat.

Verdict?

Happy yes.

Actions and personality?

For a single chapter villain she's an effective manipulator, skilled sorceress and even gets fun banter with her "old witch" style mom disliking her trendier lifestyle.

Mitigating factors?

No, she plays her role pretty well.

Verdict?

Last for the comics.

Who is Evil Ed? What has he done?

Fighting his former best friend while continuing to go on with the snark he's always been known for, Ed is eventually overpowered by both Charley and his girlfriend Amy, calming down in his last moments to forgive Charley as he crumbles to ash.

Actions and personality?

He's supposed to be a huge loser but Christopher Mintz-Plasse makes him beyond hilarious and after giving in to Jerry deploys his well-versed knowledge of vampires, swiftly lining not one or two but three cunning ploys from his entrance, disabling of the elevator and own invitation to Jerry even in his brief screen time as a villain.

Mitigating factors?

He can get pretty savage decrying Amy as an idiot but he's implied to be a lonely gay kid who had his only friend leave him, besides, he's funny, smart and nowhere near as bad as Jerry here.

Verdict?

Happy yes to good ol' Evil Ed.

Film.YoungFrankenstein

Verdict?

Happy and hilarious Halloween pass!
