At the end of the first film they are officially joined by SixthRanger Hawkeye [[HeelFaceTurn after getting over being mind-controlled.]] While there are many other SimilarSquads, they're one of the few in the franchise where roles and ranks match up properly.
** The Leader: Captain American. Commands the team out in the field, formulating plans and strategies, as a veteran in the military and HopeBringer he's the one they rally around.
** The Lancer: Iron Man. Serves as a direct foil to IdealHero Captain America, and an obnoxious [[TheAce Ace]] that always has a plan different to Steve's. He's also listed as the official NumberTwo (to Cap) of the team. In Civil War he becomes at odds with Cap and leads his own rival faction.
** The Big Guy: Thor. A PhysicalGod and a BoisterousBruiser who is a contender for the strongest Avenger and tends to use his brawn over his brains.
** The Smart Guy: Bruce Banner. His scientific expertise is the main reason why he was recruited onto the team. The Hulk for the most part serves as his combat SuperMode and isn't treated as a separate character until well into Phase 3.
** The Chick: Black Widow. The only BadassNormal, already a part of SHIELD. She's generally she's the most levelheaded and put together of the team and is constantly trying to encourage them to work together. She becomes this further in Age of Ultron, using empathy and love to manage The Hulk.
