With nothing better to do, a group of girls listen to their friend tell them a special story that only exists in their district about ''Kasako-san''. She points out that she is not a ripoff of Hanako-san before resuming, explaining that Kasako-san only comes out on rainy days and approaches those she finds. She requests that they locate her red umbrella, holding her severed arm in her free hand. If the person fails or refuses, she returns to kill them.
Miharu suddenly yells out, starling the group while chastising them for being so lazy. It's been rainy as of late but it'll clear up soon, so they should be preparing for the upcoming sports festival. As the girls show admiration for the dedicated duo, Miharu thinks about her bond with Youko, the other Sports Star of the school and her eternal rival. No matter where they compete they are always equal.
Upon arrival at home, Miharu sits down to dinner and tries to fill her parents in on how it went. Before she can go over her good news, they quickly turn focus to the upcoming sporting event. She isn't surprised by their competitive spirit, telling her that she ''has'' to beat Youko and work harder to come in first, and unsure of how to respond she quietly agrees. Miharu is stunned by the idea of them having less help, but as she begins to panic Youko quickly comes to her rescue by trying to make conversation. As the girls show admiration for the dedicated duo, Miharu thinks about her bond with Youko, the other Sports Star of the school and her eternal rival. No matter where they compete they are always equal.
Upon arrival at home, Miharu sits down to dinner and tries to fill her parents in on how it went. Before she can go over her good news, they quickly turn focus to the upcoming sporting event. She isn't surprised by their competitive spirit, telling her that she ''has'' to beat Youko and work harder to come in first, and unsure of how to respond she quietly agrees. She remains depressed the following morning as she prepares to leave for home to see that it is still raining. She can't reach her full potential like this- at this rate it's going to be hard to defeat Youko.
It's then Youko shows up, who asks if she is okay when they hear a strange sound within the distance and are shocked to see Kasako-san approaching them. Filled with dread, they listen as she warns them that they have four days to locate her umbrella. They rush straight to school, where they recall the terrifying event to alarmed classmates. Initially they show skepticism and think it's just a prank until the girls show proof; large scratches that was left on each girls arm, then they start to worry until a classmate catches their attention, believing she may be able to help out.
The girl leads everyone to a Computer and looks up Kasako-san to find out that she was a young girl who died in 1999 while searching for the umbrella some bullies had stole from her and hid somewhere. During her search she had been hit by a vehicle and in the process her arm was amputated. With this information, they are able to narrow down the possible locations of where her umbrella could have been and everyone -including some less-than thrilled students- offer to lend the girls a hand to find it.
However, three days have passed and nobody has been able to find any sign of the umbrella, and by now several of the students have stopped helping due to prior obligations. Miharu is stunned by the idea of them having less help, but as she begins to panic Youko quickly comes to her rescue by trying to make conversation. She asks what she wants to do once they find the umbrella, and tearfully Miharu tells her of how she wishes things could return to normal; back when sports were fun, and they didn't need to deal with any stress. Youko agrees and manages to raise her spirits by reminding her that they need to focus on overcoming this challenge. Miharu is amazed knowing that despite this scary situation Youko has never once worried about herself, and encouraged again, she agrees to keep looking.
Before either girl can realize it, the day ends and with gloomy spirits, it is the fourth and final day to find the umbrella. Miharu prepares to leave when her parents join her again, bringing up that they managed to book the Stadium for her to properly train. They show support and tell her to do her best. Resigned to their fate, the girls reunite to wait for Kasako-san's arrival. Youko brings up how she didn't bother telling her parents about what happened since they didn't seem to care all that much. Uneasily Miharu agrees, surprised realizing how alike their parents seem to be. Beginning to cry, the girls recall how they first met back in fourth grade when they had been set to run against one-another in the 50m. They were shocked after being told they got the same exact time, and while taking a break they became fast-friends. Since then they have spent every day together enjoying sports and competing. Both of them wish more than anything life would return to the way it was before sports became their ''only'' thing in life they could focus on. Back when they actually enjoyed it and could still do other things to make their parents happy.
As they lament this horrible situation, something catches Miharu's eye. They look up to find men collecting incombustible waste from the nearby trash bins and in a hurry Miharu digs through it -with the man trying to stop the girls- until she locates the red umbrella. She takes it as the bewildered men leave for their next stop. She checks for the name to make sure its ''the'' umbrella and prepares to call out to Youko.
But suddenly, it dons on her.
If Youko was to disappear then wouldn't things go back to how they were before? With her being the only sport star at school her parents wouldn't pressure her so much, and she would be able to enjoy it again.
Quickly Miharu shoves the umbrella into her coat, but Youko's sharp eyes happen to catch her in the process and she coldly asks to know what she found. Miharu stays quiet, expressing shock after Youko effortlessly pulls it away with bitter amusement. She isn't surprise how alike they are; in fact she recently considered doing the exact same thing. After all, they both wish to escape from the pressures of competition and want to enjoy their favorite hobby again. If one of them was gone then it would all just go away.
Miharu is stunned realizing that someone like Youko would do this and as her words sink in she begins to recall what led to her making this decision. It was within the past few days while she was by herself, patching up her sore feet in the locker room. She heard a few girls nearby discussing their opinions on who would win the upcoming event and none of them showed her any support- bringing up how dedicated Youko was and how she spent the weekend training in the Stadium. Soon Youko would most-likely be the only sports star of the school.
As the girls stand in silence, they hear the familiar hiss of Kasako-san approaching and begin fighting over the umbrella. Neither of them is willing to share it and they want the pressure to stop once and for all. In the process of their tussle, the umbrella flies over the nearby banister and they make a mad dash to it as Kasako-san gets closer. With a burst of adrenaline, Miharu shoves Youko hard enough to push her down and she embraces the umbrella with no remorse.

She recalls that day when she grabbed the umbrella however; in a flash she turned to find Youko and Kasako-san gone. It's then she notices that the weather has become cloudy again, and it begins to rain. She expresses confusion until hearing the familiar blood chilling hiss of Kasako-san's arrival. But to her alarm, she turns to find the blood drenched spirit of Youko, who asks Miharu for the umbrella...
