Donald and Douglas, the Scottish twin engines, are the respective Number 9 and 10 engines on Sir Topham Hatt's railway. Like most twins, they sometimes argue with each other, but no matter how many times they fall out, Donald and Douglas always get back together again.

One day, snow comes early to the Island of Sodor, heavier than usual, and there were many lines for Donald and Douglas, coupled back-to-back with a van between their tenders and a snowplow on their fronts, to clear. When the twins reach a red signal, Douglas asks Donald if they should head to Edward's branch line, but Donald objects. Douglas tells Donald they'd be really useful if they cleared a path to Brendam Docks, but Donald tells Douglas he thinks it would be better if they stuck to the main line for the time being. The signal turns green, and the twins set off Donald's way. Unknown to Douglas, his tender coupling begins to come loose.

Later that day, Donald and Douglas are faced with another choice. Donald wants to head down to the Sodor Search and Rescue Center, and Douglas asks him why. Donald tells him that that way, they could clear a line for the emergency vehicles. Douglas objects, and tells Donald that they should stick to the main line and clear the line for Thomas. Donald realizes Douglas does have a point, but adds that the Rescue Center is important, and it won't take long, and sets off for it. All the arguing between the twins causes a strain on Douglas' tender coupling.

At the Sodor Search and Rescue Center, Douglas complains over how long clearing the lines there is taking. At last, the lines are clear, much to Douglas' relief, and he and Donald set off back to the main line for their next job.

The twins are now stuck behind Toby, and Douglas tells Donald he told him they should have cleared his line first, as if they did, they wouldn't be stuck behind Toby. He then tells Donald that Toby can barely see anything over the snow. Donald tells Douglas to be quiet, as Toby is going as fast as he can. Toby switches lines for the twins, and Donald thanks him for it, but Douglas isn't very happy.

Soon, the twins are faced with yet another choice, and this time is where their troubles really begin. When they come to a red signal, Donald asks Douglas if they should stick to the main line or clear the line up to Ulfstead Castle. Douglas tells Donald he's not telling him anything, because no matter what he says, he'll just choose his own way. In fact, he wouldn't be surprised if he did the exact opposite of whatever he said. Donald tells Douglas not to act like he's any different from him; he always does he wants to do, and that's all there is to it. When the signal turns green, Donald and Douglas argue as they try to go in different directions. This causes Douglas' tender coupling to break and Donald to set off with both Douglas' tender and his own. Douglas' crew call Donald for help, but an angry Donald ignores them. As a result, Douglas is left behind.

Donald passes by Thomas, who greets him and asks him where Douglas is. Donald tells Thomas he left Douglas back at the junction, and he's no use to him or anyone else. Thomas then notices that Donald has both his tender and Douglas', and asks Annie and Clarabel if they've noticed.

Meanwhile, Toby comes across Douglas, greets him, and asks him where Donald is. Douglas tells Toby he neither knows nor cares, and they've parted ways. Toby then notices Douglas doesn't have his tender, and asks him if he needs help. Douglas tells him he doesn't, and is fine by himself. He's just cross with Donald. As the two engines talk to each other, Douglas' crew climb aboard Toby, who decides to leave Douglas alone if that's what he wants, and sets off. Douglas is fine for now, as his firebox was warm enough to melt the snow around him.

Meanwhile, all the way on the other side of the Island, Donald does a grand job of clearing the tracks by himself. When he stops at a siding where Gordon is, Thomas catches up to him. He asks Donald if he knows he's pulling two tenders, and points out that he has both his tender and Douglas', and that Douglas' tender coupling must have broken. Donald suddenly realizes that he must have all of Douglas' coal and water, and Thomas tells him he's right. Donald then realizes that Douglas must be stuck in the snow, and rushes away to find him.

Meanwhile, Douglas is without his crew, and there is no warmth left in his firebox. Donald is determined to find Douglas again, and calls out for him. Douglas hears him and calls for help, but Donald doesn't hear him and passes right by him.

At Toby's shed, Toby relaxes with both his crew and Douglas', the latter of whom are drinking hot cocoa. They suddenly hear Donald's whistle, and Donald stops near them. He asks Toby if he's seen Douglas, and Toby tells him he has. He was back at the junction where he left him. As Douglas' crew climb aboard Donald, Donald tells Toby he just came back from the junction and couldn't find Douglas. Toby tells Donald he thought he and Douglas had fallen out. Donald tells Toby that's true, but Douglas is still his twin, and he's still stuck out at the junction somewhere in the freezing cold. He sets off to find Douglas once more.

That evening, Donald rushes back to the junction to find Douglas, and calls out for him again. Douglas sees him, and calls for him. This time, Donald sees and hears Douglas, and finds him. Donald tells Douglas he's glad to see him again, and Douglas tells Donald he feels exactly the same way. He thought he was going to be stuck in the junction forever. Donald tells Douglas that they may still be stuck a little while longer, as he used up all his water. Douglas tells Donald that he has his tender, which might still have some water left in it. Donald likes this idea, and tells Douglas that that way, he can shunt him to the Sodor Steamworks. He assures Douglas that he and their crews will soon get him warmed up again. Douglas tells Donald he's just glad to know his twin came back for him, and that's already warmed him up. After Donald and Douglas' crew transfer Douglas' water from Douglas' tender to Donald's, Donald shunts Douglas to the Steamworks to get his tender coupling repaired and his tender reattached.

On their way to the Steamworks, Douglas teases Donald for running out of water. Donald then tells Douglas that he at least still has some coal. Douglas points out that the coal Donald has is his, and he took his time trying to find him. Donald merely takes Douglas' comments lightly, happy that they're back together once again. Both twins then laugh the day's events off.
