Spencer pushes his way past debris blocking the guardtower door and goes to stop the horn, but is impeded by a walker in the passenger seat. Suddenly, [[TheCavalry Morgan appears and dispatches the walker]] before disabling the horn. He tells Spencer that they need to go inside and stop what's happening, but the latter leaves to go check on his mother.

Morgan is confronted by several Wolves, and knocks most of them down while telling them to leave. The one leading the group chastizes him for his inability to act and rallies the group to leave, but not before [[{{Foreshadowing}} taking a weapon for his own use]]. Soon after, Morgan walks into a home and is surprised by the leader of the Wolves, who attacks and knocks him down. The lead Wolf rails at him for not killing him when he had the chance, but Morgan effortlessly dodges one of his attacks and beats him into unconsciousness.

* EvilIsOneBigHappyFamily: The Wolves seem to get along pretty well if one of their members' friendly compliment to Aphid (who they believe is Carol) is any indication.

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: When the Wolves being their attack Alexandria, Enid quickly decides to leave and asks Carl to go with her but he convinces her to saty and help protect Judith. Later, after the threat is over, Enid leaves anyway.

** Spencer, who mans the guardtower during the attack (Though he's also then too shaken up to dispatch the driver-turned-walker in the truck once it crashed into the wall, blasting the horn heard in the previous episode. Further, he elects to stay outside Alexandria with Deana instead of try to help, as the both of them recognize they'd still be a burden).

* AllThereInTheManual: The lead Wolf (the long-haired man Morgan encountered in "Conquer") is only referred to by his alias, "W Man" in the end credits, and is never mentioned by name on-screen otherwise.

** Likewise, by shooting the truck driver, Spencer has unwittingly caused a horde of walkers to be lured to Alexandria.

* BackForTheDead: Alpha Wolf returns for his final appearance.

* HideYourPregnancy: Alanna Masterson was pregnant during the filming of this episode and Tara here is mostly shown from the chest up, though the actress' pregnancy weight gain is still visible.

* BrokenTears: Despite her status as TheUnfettered, Morgan correctly assumes that Carol hates all the killing. At the end of the episode, after witnessing the Wolve's mindless violence, she finally breaks down.

* MauveShirt: Erin and Shelly. They get a tiny bit of characterization being brutally killed by the Wolves during the attack.

* Broken Tears: Despite her status as TheUnfettered, witnessing the deaths of her fellow Alexandrian's finally causes Carol to break down and cry.

* BrickJoke: Just before the Wolves attack Alexandria, Carol sets an hour-long timer for a casserole she puts in the oven. At the end of the episode, Carl is momentarily spooked by the same timer going off and ringing, and remembers to pull the casserole out of the oven.

* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Several of the RedShirt Alexandrians are shown being brutally stabbed over and over by the Wolves, who laugh maniacally as they do so.

** Carol comes across members of the Wolves repeatedly stabbing people over and over while laughing maniacally.

* StopHelpingMe: Eugene continually interjects during Tara's conversation with Denise, to the point that Tara has to tell him to shut up when he overanalyzes her comments about having a headache.

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Morgan and Aaron realized their actions from "[[Recap/TheWalkingDeadS05E16Conquer Conquer]]" have caused trouble for Alexandria when Morgan spared the two Wolves who tried to kill him and Aaron losing his backpack at the walker trap which allowed the two Wolves to find his photos of Alexandria.

** Spencer, who mans the guardtower during the attack.

* AbusiveParents: Pete is finally revealed to have indeed abused Ron, to the point that he can't even raise his right arm up.

* StopHelpingMe: Eugene continually interjects during Tara's conversation with
Denise, to the point that Tara has to tell him to shut up when he overanalyzes her comments about having a headache.

The Wolves run through the streets, attacking Alexandrians indiscriminately. Carol runs out and takes down a Wolf from killing Shelly, but realizes her wounds are fatal and reluctantly [[MercyKill puts her out of her misery]]. At the same time, Spencer is manning the town's guardtower and attempting to fire at the Wolves when he sees them driving a tractor-trailer down the road towards the wall. It smashes into the barrier and the [[HowWeGotHere horn goes off]].

Morgan saves Gabriel from being stabbed by a Wolf, is confronted by several Wolves, and knocks most of them down while telling them to leave. The one leading the group

Morgan is confronted by one of the Wolves he was previously attacked by, as well as several other of his cohorts. He begs the Wolves to leave, even as he fends them off with his staff. When only the lead Wolf and a few others remain, Morgan tells them that if they choose to continue this life, they will die. The Wolf leader mutters that they didn't choose, and orders a retreat.

Morgan ventures into a home, and is attacked by Alpha Wolf. The man smugly says that Morgan should've killed him, but is easily defeated by Morgan, who regretfully finally kills him.

Denise has failed to save Holly's life, and Alexandria is left devastated and full of corpses. Carol cries from the ordeal, and Morgan walks alone, deep in thought.

Spencer escapes the tower and is rescued by Morgan, who has returned to Alexandria. Spencer refuses to go aid Morgan and ends up protecting his mother. Morgan confronts a Wolf and orders him to leave, but his request falls on deaf ears. Carol arrives, dressed in the garb of a slain Wolf, and reveals her true nature to Morgan, though he is disgusted by how easily she is killing the Wolves. Carol also goes to put down the smoking woman, and is shaken by the ordeal. She also finds Olivia hiding in the armory, teaches her how to shoot and leaves her.

Meanwhile, Holly is taken by the group to Denise, and after Rosita and Aaron go off to rejoin the battle, Eugene and Tara prod Denise into trying to save Holly's life, despite her lack of confidence. Jessie and Sam flee into Sam's upstairs closet, and when the coast seems clear, Jessie goes back downstairs and is attacked by a female Wolf. The two grapple, Jessie unable to shoot her assailant, but when the Wolf's back is turned after briefly knocking her down, Jessie attacks her and viciously stabs her to death with a pair of scissors.

In a flashback, Enid is with her parents in a car. As her parents try to repair the car, walkers begin to approach the vehicle. Enid warns them of their approach, but is paid no heed, and ultimately, Enid is forced to watch as her parents are killed and eaten by a horde of walkers. Devastated, Enid wanders the woods, circling back to the car where her parents died. All the while, she takes to spelling out the initials "JSS", be it through drawing it on a car window or spelling it out with the bones of a turtle she eats. Eventually, she finds Alexandria and enters…

Carol is collecting some cans of food to make a casserole, and barely hides her venom for a woman who babbles on about smoking. Carol warns her that smoking will kill her. Meanwhile, Tara and Eugene go to get some aspirins for the former, and encounter Alexandria's new chief medical officer, Denise. She is a timid woman who feels afraid to step into the critical role as the community's surgeon, despite Eugene and Tara's best attempts to encourage her. Deanna is similarly less than receptive of Maggie's attempts to cheer her up as they prepare to begin growing a crop of vegetables for the community.

Gabriel approaches Carl and apologizes to him, having realized that his betrayal of the group was more [[ItsAllAboutMe about him]] than it was the group. He asks the boy to help him learn how to defend himself so that he may contribute more to Alexandria. Carl icily tells Gabriel that he should apologize to the group as a whole, but relents and agrees to train him with the machete later in the day. Carl uncomfortably watches Ron and Enid hug as he walks by with Judith in a stroller.

Jessie asks Ron to take a haircut from her, but Ron refuses, knowing that Jessie wishes to talk about him. Ron makes clear his distrust of Rick, saying he's dangerous, but Jessie retorts that Pete was even more dangerous than Rick.

Carol is working on her casseroles when she notices the Alexandrian she scolded about smoking… well, smoking, on her front lawn right where Carol can see her. Carol glares until suddenly a man attacks the woman, gorily hacking into her with a pick axe. As Carol and the capable Alexandrians begin leaping into action, the community is attacked by none other than the Wolves, who gleefully butcher the unprepared civilians. Spencer tries to snipe some Wolves until one of them crashes a food truck into the lookout post, causing the horn to go off.

* ChekhovsSkill: Subverted. Jessie's weapons training with a gun seems like it will come in handy when the Wolves attack, but she barely gets a shot off before she's knocked to the ground by one of them. She ends up using a pair of scissors to dispatch the woman who attached her.
