* AndNowForSomethingCompletelyDifferent:
** Rather than a metahuman or the Rogues, Team Flash is faced with a literal monster...which turns out to be a hologram created by a troubled teenager.
** Caitlin's powers are unlike anything we've ever seen; while Trajectory and Magenta suffered from SplitPersonality, Killer Frost completely takes over Caitlin.
** The new Harrison Wells (HR Wells), unlike the previous two iterations, is not really a scientist, but rather a novelist and an idea man (whose partner was the real brains behind STAR Labs).

* RealityEnsues: Just as Griffin Grey learned back in Season 2, once you become a meta you ''stay'' a meta whether you like it or not.

* JerkassFacade: Julian's personality is revealed to be one due to being estranged from his family because he wanted to be a scientist instead of an idle aristocrat.

* TheResenter: Julian reveals he hates metas not only because most of them squander their powers by becoming criminals, but because [[IJustWantToBeSpecial he wishes he was one and he would use his powers to help people...]][[{{Hypocrite}} while disapproving of the Flash because he believes his presence encourages the police to be lazy]]. The end of the episode shows he's starting to grow out of the latter part.

* InSpiteOfANail: Despite Barry "repairing" the Flashpoint timeline, Ronnie still died in his HeroicSacrifice and Eobard still [[KillAndReplace killed and replaced]] the Earth-1 Harrison Wells.

* IcyBlueEyes: Whenever Killer Frost overtakes Caitlin's mind, her eyes change colors.
* IdiotBall: Caitlin may be scared of out her mind, but refusing to tell Team Flash about her powers can't end well.
* IHaveThisFriend: Caitlin approached her mother for help regarding her metahuman powers saying it's for a patient of hers. When her mom tries to brush her off, Caitlin accidentally freezes her mom's desk revealing ''she's'' the patient.

* BreakTheFake: What Cisco tries to do to H.R.; thankfully Barry and the others remind him that TheTeam is built upon the belief of redemption.

* BattleCouple: The first real time since they started dating, we see Barry and Iris working together to evacuate people from the "Monster's" path.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: The NumberTwo of Caitlin's mother who first appears as a NiceGuy turns out to be a dick who plans on experimenting on Caitlin to make a name for himself.

* BullyingADragon: Nate tries to imprison Caitlin with the intent to experiment on her... not too long after finding about the extent of her ice powers.

* StartOfDarkness: Caitlin shows her first real sign of becoming Killer Frost, personality-wise. When Nate tries to stop Caitlin from leaving, she gets '''angry''' as she frostbites his arms. Her eyes then become exactly like Killer Frost's until her mom gives her a CooldownHug, and she snaps back to her old self.

* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: The teenaged boy who created and unleashed the monster hologram because he is routinely bullied by the kids at his school. He didn't want to hurt people, but he wanted to be the one instilling fear for a change.
