During breakfast next morning morning the Wheeler's house, Nancy tells Karen that she is going to a girl's night at Stacy's house this evening and expects to stay and sleep over. After breakfast, she joins up with Jonathan, who is waiting outside in his car. As she buckles herself in, she tells Jonathan that he doesn't have to go with her for this, but he says she should stop saying that all the time. They give each other an affirming nod and drive off.

As the sun sets over the forest, Eleven returns to the cabin to find Hopper waiting for her outside on the porch. She tries to ignore him, walking straight past him as she enters the cabin, but Hopper, understandably pissed about her little walkabout, follows her inside, angrily asking her whatever happened to her saying of "friends don't lie", demanding that she explains herself to him, asking if she went out to see Mike. Eleven comments that Mike didn't see her, but Hopper answers that a mother and her daughter sure did see her, and he wants to know if anyone else did the same. Eleven angrily ensures him that nobody else saw her. Hopper tells her that her excursion brought both of them in danger, to which Eleven shouts that he keeps promising her stuff that never seems to happen, and Hopper shouts back that as long nothing happens he at least knows that she is safe. Eleven accuses him of lying, to which Hoppers replies that all he does his best to protect her, feed her, and teach her, and only ever asks that she follows his rules, but she can't even do that. He then tells her that she's grounded, which means "[[CoolAndUnusualPunishment no more eggos and no TV for a week]]". As Hopper tries to take away the TV, Eleven uses her powers hold it down, and when she refuses to obey him when he tells her to knock it off, he first says that means no TV for ''two'' weeks, which then is then prolonged to a month, as she persists. Finally, Hopper pulls out the plug and tells her that it means no TV ''forever'', telling her she needs to understand that actions have consequences. An angry Eleven accuses him of being "like Papa", to which a frustrated Hopper says that if she really thinks about him that she might as well go back to the lab. "I hate you," Eleven shouts at him, to which he says he isn't too crazy about her either right now because she is acting like a brat. This makes Eleven even more furious, and she starts using her powers to cause objects to bump into Hopper, knocking him off his feet, as she goes to her room and locks the door. Hopper angrily hammers at the door, telling her that there will be no chance of her ever going out into the outside world if she doesn't pull herself together and grow up. On the other side, Eleven sits down against the wall and start to cry, culminating in her letting out a SonicScream that shatters all the windows in the house.

"''An ailing Will opens up to Joyce -- with disturbing results. While Hopper digs for the truth, Eleven unearths a surprising discovery.''"

Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and Max run into Joyce while searching for Will, only to find him standing in a catatonic state in the field, field outside the school, locked in a standoff with the Mind Flayer. Joyce Joyce, begging him to wake up manages to get through to him just as the Flayer forces some of its tendrils down his throat, and he wakes up. Reluctantly up with a gasp.

As the group watches Joyce take Will home, Max, deeply disturbed, comments on how freaky the whole thing that just happened was, as she notices Dustin, Lucas, and Mike's relatively calm reaction. Lucas comments on how it was Will's second serious episode within just two days, and Mike says that it is clearly getting worse. Max asks them what exactly is going on, but Lucas just answers that it is "nothing".

Back at their house, Joyce begs Will tell her what just happened. Will says
he doesn't remember what happened during his blackout, but Joyce asks him to tell her the truth. When Will insist that he is telling the truth, Joyce confronts with his drawings and the thing from the video, and tells him that based on them she has come to believe that Dr. Owens might be wrong and there is more going on, and she needs to know what exactly it is before she can help him. Reluctantly, Will opens up and tells her what happened.
happened. He says that he still isn't sure what the monster is and what it wants, but it keeps coming for him. As he breaks down in tears, he tells her that that he tried to make it go away, but it wouldn't and then it "got" him. Joyce asks what that means, and he says that he felt it "everywhere" and can even feel it now as they speak. Trying to comfort him, Joyce embraces him, and promises that she will do anything in her power to protect him and fix whatever it that is happening to him.

how they cannot reveal the truth to the world, as Hawkins Lab is trying desperately to contain the infection from the Upside Down, and that if the Soviets found out about it, they would almost certainly try to replicate the breach, which could have disastrous results for everyone. From what we have seen of the dangers of the Upside Down, his concerns are completely justified.

Meanwhile, [[MoodWhiplash El cleans the house]] [[MundaneUtility with her increasingly stable powers]] while the boys (minus Max, to her obvious distress) try to figure out how they can help Will. While cleaning, El discovers a basement with a box labeled "Hawkins Lab".

Dr. Owens explains to Jonathan and Nancy why he had them detained, and shows them the remains of the gate. He tells them that they can't destroy it, but can beat it back, like pulling weeds. Will continues drawing a series of what look like incomprehensible scribbles, but Joyce figures out that they're parts of a larger puzzle and begins piecing them together. Assembling them reveals what looks like a connected series of tunnels or tentacles that Hopper quickly figures out are actually vines. He heads to the pumpkin patch while Max and Lucas argue, and Max's brother warns her to stay away from him. El finds Terry Ives's file and attempts to contact her.

Jonathan and Nancy leave the lab and it's revealed that they'd been planning (or at least prepared) for capture: Nancy taped their conversation with Dr. Owens, recording proof of Barb's death. She reaffirms that she wants to go through with telling Barb's mother the truth.

Dustin comes home to find Dart's tank shattered and a trail of black slime leading to his closet, where he discovers Dart--now clearly an adolescent Demogorgon--devouring his mother's beloved cat. Hopper's dig opens up a massive tunnel underneath the pumpkin field that leads into the Upside-Down.

"''An ailing Will opens up to Joyce -- with disturbing results. While Hopper digs for the truth, Eleven unearths a surprising discovery.''"

Dustin, Mike, Lucas, and Max run into Joyce while searching for Will, only to find him catatonic in the field, locked in a standoff with the Mind Flayer. Joyce manages to get through to him just as the Flayer forces some of its tendrils down his throat, and he wakes up. Reluctantly he tells her what happened.

El returns to find Hopper understandably pissed about her little adventure and tells her that she's grounded, which means "[[CoolAndUnusualPunishment no more eggos]]". This escalates into an argument that ends with El letting out a SonicScream that shatters all the windows in the house.

Jonathan and Nancy go to see Barb's parents while Joyce cares for a steadily deteriorating Will. When she takes his temperature and finds it abnormally low, she suggests trying to warm him up, but Will violently refuses, saying that "he likes it cold". Meanwhile, Barb's parents fail to show up and Nancy and Jonathan are cornered in the park by a group of plain-clothes agents.

Hopper comes to Joyce's house to find Will sitting in the cold. Will confesses that whatever the Flayer did to him left some part of it behind, allowing him to "know things" that he didn't before. Joyce [[TitleDrop sees an old drawing of Will's D&D character]] and suggests that, since he can't articulate exactly what it is the Flayer did to him, he should draw it instead.
