* HonoraryAunt: Discussed; after hearing the other gems were [[TrueCompanions like family]] to Steven's mother, Andy starts calling them Steven's "aunts". Unlike when they were called his "sister", Steven immediately understands and accepts Andy's terminology.

* OvenLogic: Pearl and Peridot set the improvised cooktop at 2000 degrees. Somehow this doesn't incinerate the things they cook.

* IrisOut: Over Andy.

** Andy does this when he asks Greg if any of the Gems are Steven's mom. Cue Amethyst making the embarrassed face you make when you find out someone has a crush on you. Humorously, after being turned off by his attitude, Pearl remarks that "Our Greg is clearly the superior one." (which is quite a far cry from the earlier episodes where she and the rest of the Gems tried to avoid Greg most of the time).

* {{Tuckerization}}: Nick [=DeMayo=] is an animation director for the show and directed this episode.

* AreYouPonderingWhatImPondering: Andy takes one look at the weird structures Peridot and Lapis built on the barn, their strange appearance, and their "weird jewelry", and concludes... they're a pair of dirty hippies squatting in his family barn.

* LiteralMetaphor: Andy accuses the Gems of being illegal aliens without realizing ([[WeirdnessCensor maybe]]) that they're literal aliens from another planet.

* NeverSayDie: "Rose is no longer with us" probably sounds like a polite euphemism for "she died" to Andy, although the truth is more complicated than that.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Lapis and Peridot are upset that they can't create sapient life, much like a same-sex couple who want children. Steven, meanwhile, takes the place of the surrogate by using his healing spit to give one of the pumpkins sentience.

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Pearl misunderstands Andy when he expresses his anger at the re-purposed plane engine, thinking that he's confused about what it ''is'', then suggests that they all get married after overhearing Andy's negative reaction to learning that Greg and Rose weren't technically married. All the Gems miss the point of passing food down the table, eventually circling a piece of cake right back to Andy.

** This is the second time Greg's left an important figure in his life out of his stories for Steven, namely his ''cousin'' Andy. The first time it was his former manager Marty, who was Sour Cream's father.

* ABoyAndHisX: The episode starts with Steven giving life to another vegetable, this time a pumpkin that acts like a dog that latches onto Steven immediately. At least until Steven carves a Jack 'O Lantern from a regular pumpkin, which scares him so much he runs to Lapis and Peridot for protection, making it "two Gem girls and their pumpkin-dog".

** Not marrying.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Lapis and Peridot are upset that they can't create sapient life, much like a same-sex couple who want children. Steven, meanwhile, take the place of the surrogate by using his healing spit to give one of the pumpkins sentience.

** Steven attempts to cheer up Lapis and Peridot from their disappointment over not being able to create life, he uses his plant powers to do so. However, the new life, Pumpkin only like Steven, not the two Gems.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Lapis and Peridot are upset that they can't create sapient life, much like a same-sex couple who want children. Steven, meanwhile, take the place of the surrogate by using his healing spit to bring one of the pumpkins to life.

* AchievementsInIgnorance: Lapis and Peridot have grown crops to feed at least a dozen people, ''on their first try,'' but they're sad about the fact that corn isn't sentient and thus can't talk to them the way soldiers on Homeworld can.

* BaitAndSwitch: From the way the episode starts, it at first seems that we're going to get another "sentient vegetable" episode with Steven giving life to Pumpkin and scaring him, with a dose of Homeworld angst for Lapis and Peridot. Then [[MoodWhiplash Andy shows up]], which sends the episode in another direction entirely.

** Steven creates another [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E34WatermelonSteven sentient vegetable]].

* MoralityPet: For all his bitterness, Andy never holds any grudge against Steven, his "cute" nephew. On hearing the meal will be vegetarian, he promises to get Steven pepperoni for his birthday. When Steven says he wants to get to know him and make him family, Andy has a JerkassRealization and turns the plane around to go to the barn.

* TheGardener: Lapis and Peridot have become this, the former a Magic Gardener by using [[MakingASplash her powers]] to water the plants, and the latter a Mundane Gardener by using her knowledge of how to grow Gems to grow plants.

* DudeWheresMyReward: Peridot points out that they ''saved the world'' and ultimately got nothing for it. Her complaint goes to the comical opposite extreme, [[EntitledBastard saying they should just be able to take whatever they want without question]].
* EatingOptional: The Gems, as usual. Not even [[BigEater Amethyst]] [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness is eating anything]] because she filled up on cooking oil earlier.
* ExtremeOmnivore: When explaining to Andy how Gems are TheNeedless, Steven mentions how Amethyst eats anyway, prompting her to mention that she's full from the three bottles of cooking oil she had. And then she ''burps fire''.

** In an effort to cheer Lapis and Peridot up after they learn that Steven made Veggie Head (and that he likes him more as a result), Steven shows them how to carve a pumpkin... while Veggie Head is right next to him. He's understandably terrified, and rushes into Lapis' arms for comfort and protection.

* UnexpectedCharacter: There was very little buildup to Andy's very existence, let alone presence in the episode, with the mention of Greg's aunt and uncle being the only hint.

* DudeWheresMyRespect: Peridot points out that they ''saved the world'' and ultimately got nothing for it. Her complaint goes to the comical opposite extreme, [[EntitledBastard saying they should just be able to take whatever they want without question]].

* AllAnimalsAreDogs: Veggie Head is a living, sentient pumpkin that acts and sounds just like a dog.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Both Lapis and Peridot long to create sapient life but are unable to. Steven, wanting to help, use his healing spit on a pumpkin seed and planted it in their garden, creating Veggie Head.

* HighSchoolAU: The gang are in Home Economics; Amethyst is just eating the ingredients, Garnet is posing dramatically about to cut an onion that's in her hand, Pearl is failing to mix a bowl, and uncle Andy is yelling at them. Greg is actually doing pretty well, but Peridot (who's holding a pumpkin) and Lapis are just staring at him while Steven walks by carrying something. Strangely, Andy looks like his present self while Greg looks like his past self.
