* NotMyProblem: Glaber really doesn't care about Spartacus to begin with, until Senator Albinius makes it clear the Roman Senate blames Glaber for Spartacus' actions, and forces him to take a small contingent of Roman soldiers to deal with the issue.

In the weeks after their escape from the ludus, Spartacus and Crixus command and train their small troop of domestic slaves and gladiators, while making temporary accommodation in the sewers. Spartacus has thoughts only on vengeance; to kill Glaber, while Crixus is motivated with finding his lost love Naevia. Glaber, now Praetor with the Roman Senate, is commanded by his father-in-law to return to Capua and put down Spartacus. Ilithyia, now pregnant, wants to stay in Rome, but Glaber demands she accompany him. Meanwhile, Crixus obtains information from a brothel owner to seek Naevia in the south. Spartacus sends Aurelia, wife of his late friend Varro, north to reunite her with her son. Glaber, Ilithyia and his soldiers return to Capua and take up residence in the ludus and are shocked to find Lucretia alive but seemingly insane and she remembers very little, to Ilithyia's relief. Elsewhere, Oenomaus (Doctore) remains estranged from Spartacus and Crixus and feels extremely guilty for helping destroy the House of Batiatus. He warns them of the strength of Glaber and the Romans. Crixus urges that they should all flee south as if they kill Glaber right now they will not be able to defeat the legions they will send due to their small numbers and lack of trained fighters. Spartacus goes on his own to kill Glaber in the town square, and discovers they have captured and mortally wounded Aurelia. Spartacus eventually breaks cover and engages Glaber and his soldiers in combat. Spartacus is assisted by Crixus and the Gladiators and they escape with Aurelia as well as kill or wounded many Roman soldiers, but fail to kill Glaber who is only wounded on his left arm. Afterwards, Aurelia asks Spartacus to promise to stay away from her son before dying. Spartacus agrees with Crixus that they should march south to look for Naevia, as well as seek to free all slaves who come into their path.

!!Tropes:
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Crixus ends up torturing the mortally wounded whoremonger for information about Naevia, offering to end his suffering if he gives up the information. He does this by slowly pulling the man's intestines out of his stomach wound. Yeah.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Crixus lambasts Spartacus near the end for not considering the consequences of immediately killing Glaber. They can deal with Glaber's small force of Romans, but if Glaber dies Rome will start sending entire legions after them, which will quickly kill wipe them out.
* DrivenToMadness: Having her entire house killed in front of her, her baby killed INSIDE of her, and her husband pulling a DiedInYourArmsTonight have all pulled a nasty number on Lucretia's mental health. She's ranting lunatic when Glaber and Ilithyia find her, but seems to calm down later on.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Praetor Varinius quickly establishes himself as a SmugSnake jerkass when he tells Glaber to his face that he lusts after Ilythyia, despite Glaber being relatively polite to him up to this point. Seppius doesn't fair much better.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Spartacus has one such moment when he realizes sending Aurelia away got her tortured and eventually killed.
* NotMyProblem: Glaber really doesn't care about Spartacus to begin with, until Senator Albinius makes it clear the Roman Senate blames Glaber for Spartacus' actions, and forces him to take a small contingent of Roman soldiers to deal with the issue.
* ProperlyParanoid: Glaber has lost all trust in Ilythyia since last season, and demands that she accompany him back to Capua so he can keep an eye on her. He's completely justified in his suspicions, as up to this point Ilythyia has betrayed him several times.
* RankUp: Glaber has been promoted from Legatus to Praetor, and begun using his first name Gaius, where last season he was known as Claudius.
* ShaggyDogStory: All of Spartacus and Varro's efforts to protect Aurelia come to nothing, when she ends up being tortured to death by Glaber.
* SuicidalOverconfidence: The men who attack Oenomaus in the street actually thought they could easily capture a man who survived a fight with the Shadow of Death. Granted he was unarmed, but he curbstomps all of them nonetheless.
* TimeSkip: About six weeks have passed since the slaughter of the House of Batiatus. Enough time for Ilithyia to learn of her pregnancy and the Romans to begin fighting back against the rebels.
