The Beacon Dance is well underway, and everyone is having a great time except for Ruby and Jaune, but at least they can relate to each other about how awkward it is for them. Bringing up Weiss, Jaune is shocked to learn that she went alone to the dance despite seeing her invite Neptune earlier. Jaune decides to confront Neptune, but sees Pyrrha leaving and decides to check on her instead. When confronted outside, Pyrrha reveals that see too is attending the dance without a partner: because of her reputation and her talents, others perceive her as "too good" for them, but Jaune is different; he accepts her as just another friend and she appreciates him helping her build meaningful friendships, and hints that she would have liked to have gone to the dance with him.

Neptune arrives as Pyrrha leaves, greeting Jaune and complaining about the ball, but liking the "cute girls" present. Jaune accuses him of toying with girl's feelings, particularly Weiss'. Neptune reveals that he turned her down because he can't dance, and didn't want to embarrass himself. Noting Jaune's interest in her, he offers Jaune the chance to continue his pursuit of the heiress, [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy but Jaune declines, repeating Pyrrha's previous advice to speak to her honestly.]]

Ruby and Yang are overseeing things, and then they notice a peculiar sight: Jaune in a white dress, asking Pyrrha if she would dance with him. Chuckling, she agrees, leading to a dance number with JNPR. As Neptune watches, he is joined by Weiss, who asks him what changed his mind. He points over to Jaune and explains that he convinced him to do so, saying that she has good friends looking out for her.

Meanwhile, Emerald and Mercury continue their work infiltrating the dance party, keeping an eye out while Cinder infiltrates the CCT tower. She makes short work of the guards and hacks into the system's library, just as Emerald informs her that James Ironwood has left the dance.

Ruby has seen Cinder climbing on the rooftops. Summoning her weapon locker and taking up Crescent Rose, she takes pursuit. In the library she encounters Cinder and a brief, indecisive skirmish ensues before Ironwood's arrival forces Cinder to retreat. She changes into her ballroom attire in a moment and disappears into the crowd. Telling Mercury to enjoy the rest of the night, Ruby and Ironwood are left gazing in shock at the hacked terminal, displaying a black queen chess piece.

Jaune confronts Neptune about Weiss and has a heart-to-heart with Pyrrha. Meanwhile, Ruby spots Cinder infiltrating the CCT and leaves the dance to confront her.

He spots Pyrrha leaving the ballroom and speaks with her, learning no one asked her, intimidated by the fame she has gained. Jaune speaks to Neptune, who admits he didn't come with Weiss because he can't dance, but Jaune encourages him to speak with her. Jaune returns to the dance wearing a dress, as per a promise he made should no one ask Pyrrha out. As Team JNPR leads the party, Ruby steps outside and spots a disguised Cinder vaulting over the rooftops. Cinder breaks into the CCT tower and hacks into the network, only for Ruby to arrive followed by Ironwood after they discover the guards have been knocked out. Cinder escapes back to the dance without notice.
