Orel adopts a dog that he names Bartholomew ([[spoiler:but is very strongly implied to be the second coming of Jesus]]), who ends up popular among the kids. Perhaps too popular, as the adults start to hate him for being more popular than them or making them looking bad. When they find out Orel loves Bartholomew more than Jesus, they convince him the only thing he can do is put Bartholomew down, so he could love Jesus the most again. Orel tries to console himself by remembering they'll meet in heaven, but Bloberta says that animals don't have souls and can't go to heaven.
