cursed. However, she says that baby #8 will not be drowned; he is “cursed” to live a long life. Ganga takes him away to raise and educate him.

After a few years, Ganga returns with a teenage boy, states that his name is Devavrat and hands him over to Shantanu’s care. Devavrat grows into an intelligent but fierce and skilled warrior.

* WardrobeMalfunction: Occurred to Ganga when she was in India’s divine court. A gust of wind blew her sari aside causing her to momentarily expose a breast.
* [[BecauseDestinySaysSo Because A Horoscope Says So]]: The reason why Dashraj the fisherman insist that Shantanu appoint his son(s) born of Satyavati as his Crown Prince instead of the already appointed Crown Prince Devavrat. Devavrat himself vows to abdicate and remain celibate and childless because he cannot countermand a horoscope.
* BrokenAesop: The [[Recap/MahabharataS01E01 previous episode]] established that a king must choose his successor based on merit alone. And in here, Shantanu rejects Dashraj’s demand because Devavrat has proven merit compared to Satyavati’s sons who don’t exist yet. But Devavrat renounces his claim to the throne because some horoscope said that someone else shall rule. So, horoscopes triumph over merit now.
* CelibateHero: What Devavrat takes a vow to be.
* OldFashionedRowboatDate: Shantanu asks Satyavati to row him back and forth and back again across the Yamuna.
* ParentalMarriageVeto: Played with. Dashraj agrees to let Satyavati marry Shantanu on the condition that Satyavati’s son(s) be appointed as heirs to the kingdom. Because Shantanu refuses to do so, the marriage is disallowed.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Satyavati the fisherman’s daughter and boat coxswain on the Yamuna River, for Ganga the river spirit.

* HeldGaze: Shantanu was previously King Mirabhisheik and was in India’s court in Heaven. When Ganga dropped by, the two of them caught each other’s gaze and continued to stare at each other. However, Ganga suffered a WardrobeMalfunction at the same time. Because Mirabhisheik didn’t avert his gaze, Brahma cursed him to be reborn once more as a human. Because Ganga didn’t avert her gaze to fix her clothes, she was cursed too.
