There is one defence against intruders that stops them. The Department of Mysteries has a rotating hall that leaves them unable to tell which door is which. They have to try several doors to find the one that Harry found. The first door leads to a hallway containing a tank with ''brains'' inside it. The second door leads to a room that resembles amphitheatre and has something ominous in the centre: an archway with a veil hanging across it. Harry and Luna can hear voices coming from it but the others can't, and Harry finds himself tempted to walk into it. The third door cannot be unlocked.

Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny and Luna are now free of Umbridge's clutches and ready to embark on a mission to save Sirius. They climb onto the Thestrals and fly to London. They enter the Ministry at Magic. It seems to be an odd case of SwissCheeseSecurity. They have no problem entering the Ministry after explaining they are on a "rescue mission". No security guard is there and the atrium gates are wide open. Moreover, Harry's group are able to walk straight into the Department of Mysteries, the most secretive department of the Ministry.

They turn out to be lucky on the fourth try. This leads into a room that Harry now noticed is filled with clocks and symbols of time. They go on through into the room where Sirius is being held, a hallway filled with shelves of crystal balls - records of prophecies made by Seers. They get to the zone where Sirius is supposed to be held captive, but he isn't there. What Ron does notice is that one of the prophecies has Harry's name on it. He lifts it up. Then Lucius Malfoy appears behind them: "Now turn around, nice and slowly, and give that to me."
