Soon enough, the Christmas holidays are over and it's time to go back to school. Mrs Weasley is upset; Percy stormed out after being pelted with food by at least one of his siblings. Back in Hogwarts, Harry meets with Hermione. She brings Harry a message from Dumbledore to arrange another private lesson. Ron is detained by Lavender and Ginny has to leave to see Dean, though Harry notices she does not seem thrilled with the prospect. Harry is left with Hermione, and he tells her about his [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrinceC15TheUnbreakableVow eavesdropping on Snape and Malfoy]], his discussions about it with everyone else and then his meeting with the Minister. As Harry expected, Hermione also thinks Snape is spying on Malfoy. She notes that they have heard Greyback's name mentioned before by [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrinceC6DracosDetour Malfoy in Knockturn Alley]]. Meanwhile, the Sixth Years are informed that they are about to begin learning to Apparate.

Harry goes to a private lesson with Dumbledore. He tells Dumbledore about his meeting with the Minister, who wanted to use him as a poster boy. Dumbledore confirms that this was what caused the [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrinceC3WillAndWont rumoured split]] between him and Scrimgeour the previous summer, and that Scrimgeour has been spying on him since. He then tells Dumbledore about what he heard when he eavesdropped on Snape. Dumbledore replies by saying that he knows what's going on and that nothing that Harry has said has taken him by surprise. Harry is incredulous as Dubledore insists they press on with the lesson.

He begins by recounting Tom Riddle's time at Hogwarts. To almost everyone around him he seemed talented, popular and well-behaved. Beneath the surface, he put together a well-organised gang of bullies that was the forerunner of the Death Eaters. He also obsessively researched his parentage. During a summer holiday at the orphanage, he then travelled to Little Hangleton. They step into the Pensieve to see another memory.

Tom Riddle stole Morfin's ring and wand, then went over to [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFireC1TheRiddleHouse the Riddle House]] to kill his father and grandparents. He then returned Morfin's wand and bewitched Morfin into thinking he had committed the crime, then fled. While the Muggle police were baffled, the Ministry of Magic knew straight away that AWizardDidIt. And by remarkable coincidence, a convicted Muggle-attacker happened to live nearby. As Morfin happily confessed to the crime and [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFireC9TheDarkMark they could tell his wand was used to do it]], he was taken off to Azkaban. Dumbledore eventually visited Morfin in prison and used Legilimency to uncover the truth. He tried to get Morfin released, but Morfin died before this could be arranged.

Dumbledore has another memory to show Harry. It shows a younger Horace Slughorn, with Riddle and several other students. At one point, white mist fills the room and Slughorn can be heard saying "You'll go wrong, boy!" The mist clears and the characters in the memory don't appear to have noticed it. Later on, everyone turns to leave and Riddle asks Slughorn a question about 'Horcruxes'. White mist again fills the room, while Slughorn is heard angrily denying that he knows what Horcruxes are and telling Riddle not to ask questions about them again.

Once they finish, Dumbledore explains that the memory has been tampered with. Slughorn is clearly embarrassed by some of the things he said. Dumbledore then sets Harry homework: persuade Slughorn to reveal the true memory. Harry is left clueless as to how he can help.
