Wormtail is still crying from having to cut his hand off. Voldemort pulls up a sleeve on Wormtail's arm to reveal a tattoo that looks [[Recap/HarryPotterAndTheGobletOfFireC9TheDarkMark like the Dark Mark]] and presses it. Voldemort tells Harry that his parents came from the local village. Voldemort says that his muggle father Tom Riddle Sr. "abandoned" his mother after learning that she was a witch. Many years later, he killed his father (and presumably the other Riddles too).

A group of hooded Death Eaters apparate into the graveyard and assemble. Voldemort does not seem pleased to see them. He is disappointed, if not disgusted, that they deserted him after his previous downfall, pretended to be innocent, mingled with the Voldemort-free wizarding world and never tried to find him. Even though Voldemort hinted that he had taken steps to protect himself from being killed. One Death Eater tries to beg for forgiveness, but Voldemort responds by [[KickTheDog torturing him with the Cruciatus Curse]]. He then turns to Wormtail. He describes Wormtail as being a DirtyCoward who was hardly more loyal than the other Death Eaters, but he feels modicum of gratitude because Wormtail helped him return. So he rewards him by conjuring a magic hand to take the place of the hand that was cut off, while warning Wormtail that his loyalty must "never waver again."

Voldemort now walks around the group, poring over to see who's present. He mentions that the Death Eaters who are now in Azkaban will be freed, because the Dementors will join their side, as will the giants. A few of them Harry has seen before: Lucius Malfoy is there, and so is [[Recap/HarryPotterAndThePrisonerOfAzkabanC16ProfTrelawneysPrediction Buckbeak's would-be executioner]], Macnair. Others have surnames that Harry recognises: Crabbe and Goyle. He mentions that there is one too cowardly to return, who will "pay". Another Voldemort believes has "left him forever" and thus will be killed. Finally, there is a "most faithful servant" who is stationed at Hogwarts and helped bring Harry to the location.

Lucius asks Voldemort how he managed to return. Voldemort recounts the whole story of his life since his downfall. He is now aware that he was defeated because Harry's mother died to save him, creating a magical protection that caused the curse to rebound. By using Harry, Voldemort believes he has circumvented the barrier, and he demonstrates that he can now touch Harry without being burned ([[Recap/HarryPotterAndThePhilosophersStoneC17TheManWithTwoFaces as happened to Quirrell]]). Since had gone [[{{Foreshadowing}} "further than anybody" towards becoming immortal]], the rebounding curse did not kill him. It destroyed his body and left him in [[AndIMustScream a sort of wraith-like existence]] in which he had to sleeplessly use willpower to stay alive. Unable to use magic, his only power was that he could possess people and animals. Four years ago, Quirrell met with Voldemort and was tempted into helping him. Voldemort was able to partly-possess Quirrell and they tried to steal the Philosopher's Stone, [[Recap/HarryPotterAndThePhilosophersStoneC17TheManWithTwoFaces without success]].

So Voldemort retreated into hiding once more, fearing he might be finished. Then Wormtail arrived. Wormtail communicated with the rats to learn of where Voldemort was hiding. On the way he met Bertha Jorkins. Meeting a Ministry witch , but instead Wormtail was able to lure her to Voldemort and take her down. They tortured her and Voldemort used MindRape to break through a Memory Charm that had been placed on her. He learned from her about the Triwizard Tournament, and about a faithful Death Eater who could help him. Unable to possess Jorkins (who could not survive after all the torture) or Wormtail (who everyone thought was dead), he and Wormtail instead concocted a potion to create the child-like body.

The plan worked, and now Harry is at Voldemort's mercy, and he demonstrates this by torturing Harry with the Cruciatus Curse. He says that Harry has escaped in the past only due to luck, and that in practice he could always have overpowered with magic. To prove this, in what must surely be a monumental case of BondVillainStupidity, he orders Wormtail to untie Harry and give him back his wand.

Voldemort then planned to create the potion to revive him and for this he needed the blood of an enemy. Although technically almost any wizard could have counted as an enemy, Voldemort specifically wanted Harry. He believed that the blood of the enemy who had caused his downfall would make him stronger, as well as diluting the protection Harry's mother had given him. They tracked down the unnamed faithful Death Eater, who would be stationed at Hogwarts. This Death Eater hoodwinked the Goblet of Fire, arranged to get Harry through the tournament and turned the Cup into a Portkey, in order to satisfy Voldemort's ComplexityAddiction.
