* BackToBackBadasses: Silver Team forms a three-man version of an Infantry Square when they prepare to protect Chief from the gathered Marines at [=FleetCom=] HQ.

* BlatantLies: Halsey is asked if she's found a way to create a general artificial intelligence other than illegal human flash-cloning. Halsey just nods to avoid getting an actual denial on record, since we know from the previous episode she has in fact kept her illegal project going.

* DramaticUnmask: When Kwan holds him at gunpoint, the Chief points out the rounds would never penetrate his armor. He then unmasks himself and tells her to aim for his head to gain her trust.

* WouldHurtAChild: The Elites intentionally slaughter a group of non-combatants, including children.

** Kwan and her father Jin survive the battle, but a wounded Elite stumbles in and Jin gives his life trying to drive it off. The Chief then kills the Elite, leaving her alone.

* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: While the Master Chief Petty Officer is the highest enlisted rank it's possible to obtain, with a pay grade of E-9, under traditional military rules, commissioned officers outrank enlisted... even if the officers are lowly [=O-2s=] like Vannak-134 and Riz-028. That said, this problem also exists back in the main continuity, and is circumvented with the {{handwave}} that John is and has always been the leader of the [=SPARTAN-II=] TrueCompanions.

Back on the Condor, John receives a transmission containing orders to kill Kwan Ha for her refusal to cooperate. However, the two have already begun to bond, with Kwan questioning John's [[MyMasterRightOrWrong unwavering devotion to duty]]. The Chief ultimately decides to spare her -- a hard task when the UNSC have the Condor under total surveillance and can take control of it remotely. John's attempts to seize control of the ship, but is thwarted, and UNSC Marines are placed on standby to surround the ship when it lands. Silver Team is sent as well, but receives secret orders from Halsey to fire upon anyone who attempts to harm the Chief.

On the planet Madrigal, a rebel movement led by General Jin Ha has seized the planet's deuterium refineries. While local politician Vinsher Grath continues to make public pleas for peace with the UNSC, the rebels are convinced that it's only a matter of time before the Spartans are sent to crush them. Despite these concerns, it ultimately proves to be an outside force that poses the most threat, as the rebels' stronghold comes under attack by mysterious aliens known as "the Covenant".

On Reach, UNSC Fleet Command discusses the events on Madrigal. The Chief's visions are of concern: his enhancements are meant to suppress memories of that sort, and his loyalty comes into question. Dr. Catherine Halsey, the head of the SPARTAN-II program, insists that these concerns are unfounded and John can be trusted, but Captain Jacob Keyes and Admiral Margaret Parangosky disagree. Meanwhile, the sole Covenant soldier to survive the attack reports John's activation of the artifact to one of the Covenant's leaders, the Prophet of Mercy, who in turn informs "the Blessed One" -- a young human girl serving the Covenant.

As the battle turns to a slaughter, a UNSC "Condor" dropship arrives carrying a squad of Spartans, Silver Team, consisting of Lieutenants Vannak-134 and Riz-028, Petty Officer 1st Class Kai-125, and their leader, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117. The Spartans and the rebels [[EnemyMine join forces]] to defeat the aliens, but in the end only one local survives: General Ha's teenage daughter, Kwan. Investigating the Covenant's landing site, Silver Team discovers an excavation containing an artifact of unknown origin. The device reacts to the Master Chief's touch, lighting up and filling his mind with visions of his childhood.

The Spartans and the rebels [[EnemyMine join forces]] to defeat the aliens, but in the end only one local survives: General Ha's teenage daughter, Kwan. Taking advantage of the confusion, Chief and Kwan rush to the cockpit and blast off to parts unknown.
