The Fringe team investigates after a man turns to crystal and explodes in the middle of a train station. Olivia and Peter uncover evidence that the exploding man was part of a military experiment during his tour in Iraq, and now his former commanding officer is using the former test subjects for his own purposes. Fringe Division is barely able to stop the officer from using another of the test subjects as a human bomb. When captured, the officer claims he's trying to wage war on a hidden enemy: the target of the second bomber is revealed to be a courier who is passing information to the Observer.

Meanwhile, Sam Weiss is trying to teach Olivia how to walk without her cane and use her gun properly by having her do mundane tasks around the bowling alley, including tying and retying her shoelaces. He also becomes increasingly short with her, until Olivia gets fed up and draws her weapon on Weiss without thinking. It takes her a few moments to realise that she did so without her cane and without any problems, and that her physical condition is psychosomatic.
