It's Christmas Day and Scrooge has decided to take the kids on an excursion to Mt. Neverrest, the highest mountain on the planet that many a daring adventurer have tried and failed to reach the top of, with Scrooge intending to be the first to succeed. Louie is dissatisfied about having to spend the holiday scaling a mountain in freezing snow instead of back home waiting for Santa Claus (who Scrooge says is NOT allowed in the mansion), but Huey shares his great uncle's eagerness to scale the unclimbed peak, as it means he will be able to earn his Junior Woodchuck cartography badge. Though he has the latest tech and equipment to help them reach their destination, Scrooge dismisses it and claims that all they need are wits, determination, and his old surveying tools. Once Launchpad lets them out of the plane, the group is surprised to see a tourist resort at the base of the mountain, as they previously believed Mt. Neverrest to be uncharted territory.
Going through the resort, Huey and Scrooge respectively criticize the inaccuracies of a novelty map sold at the resort and the tourists seeking to cut loose instead of trying to ascend the mountain. Regardless, Huey is still enthusiastic to begin the hike and says they will be just like George Mallardy, a mountaineer who managed to get the farthest up the mountain seventy-five years ago only to disappear in his efforts to rescue an inept fellow climber dubbed "the Neverrest Ninny." Scrooge however is not impressed by the legend of Mallardy and the Neverrest Ninny, dismissing it as a way to sell merchandise at the resort and promises they will break his record by reaching Neverrest's summit.
Meanwhile, Webby eagerly purchases a sled so she can cross sledding off her list of life goals but Dewey encourages her to wait until they reach the top of Neverrest for the ultimate sledding experience as they go back down while Launchpad is duped by a shifty vendor into buying a hefty amount of climbing gear so as to not get "Ice fever". Once everyone regroups to begin the climb up, Louie instantly opts out once Scrooge tells him there's no treasure waiting for him at the top of the mountain. Launchpad also is unable to join the climb because the heavy load he's carrying sends him tumbling back down the mountain and into a sauna, where he mistakes the steam fogging up his goggles for the first symptom of Ice fever. Undeterred despite losing half of their supplies with Launchpad, the rest of the group resolve to continue their trek with Scrooge mumbling that having "Neverrest Ninnies" with them will only slow down progress, confusing Huey since Scrooge previously claimed the Neverrest Ninny was a myth.
The group continues their ascent, with Huey making sure to record all the noteworthy locations they pass so they don't get lost on the way back down and Scrooge lightening the load by throwing away equipment he considers unnecessary. Unfortunately, they somehow find themselves back at a demon head-shaped rock formation just as it is beginning to snow. Rather than turn back (as Huey seems to think they should do), Scrooge decides they will take refuge in a nearby cave which makes Huey suspicious since Scrooge seems to know the terrain quite well despite the area being uncharted. Once inside the cave, they make an alarming discovery: the skeleton of the late George Mallardy! Upon further inspection, the kids find Mallardy has written the words "Curse you [=McDuck=]!" At that point, Scrooge reluctantly reveals the truth: HE was the Neverrest Ninny!
Seventy-five years prior, a younger, less experienced, and more cautious Scrooge had made his first million and decided to celebrate the occasion by scaling Mount Neverrest with George Mallardy helping him in reaching the summit. Unfortunately, Mallardy gave Scrooge no small measure of ridicule for packing a large amount of equipment for the journey and then cut him loose when he refused to lighten his load so they could advance further up a sheer cliff, going as far as to laugh at Scrooge as he fell to what could have been his death.
Scrooge finishes the story by saying that the endeavor caused him to be branded the Neverrest Ninny by Mallardy, who in spite of not surviving the rest of the journey with limited supplies went down in history as the duck who made it the farthest up the mountain...until Scrooge steps over his skeleton to symbolize he's made more progress than Mallardy did before his death and shamelessly gloats about it.
The kids are repulsed by their uncle's attitude, though Scrooge defends himself by pointing out he could very well have died because of Mallardy and declares they will succeed where he failed, despite Huey arguing that the mountain is proving too difficult to chart and the group finding themselves back at Bunny Rock once the storm subsides.

Going through the resort, Huey and Scrooge respectively criticize the inaccuracies of a novelty map sold at the resort and the tourists seeking to cut loose instead of trying to ascend the mountain. Regardless, Huey is still enthusiastic to begin the hike and says they will be just like George Mallardy, a mountaineer who managed to get the farthest up the mountain seventy-five years ago only to be lost trying to rescue an inept fellow climber.

Once Launchpad lets them out of the plane, the group is surprised to see a tourist resort at the base of the mountain, as they previously believed Mt. Neverrest to be uncharted territory.
