Is California one of those states? And is it required to forbid them even if they're a few seconds late?

* TruthInTelevision:
** Many people seem to think that no high school teacher is allowed to lock out a student or lower their grade for a missed test, but in actuality, this has been acceptable in many states for a number of years at the high school level and is considered quite conventional at many colleges and universities across the entirety of the United States.
** In light of increasing school violence and school shootings, many high schools now ''require'' teachers to lock the door at the beginning of class and ''allow no one in after the bell rings''. At some schools today, Mr. Roland would be fired just for allowing Josh to step into the classroom at all once Josh arrived late.

Added DiffLines:

* BigNo: Drake gives one to Mr. Roland after leaving the power shower when he tells him to sit down. Keep in mind that this technically qualifies as talking back to his teacher; it says ''a lot'' that Drake was willing to disobey his teacher just to have a chance to mend his relationship with Josh.

Added DiffLines:

* DullSurprise: The look on Josh's face after Drake's tearful apology to him after his accident in chemistry class is clearly this. Clearly Josh was ''not'' expecting Drake to sincerely apologize and admit that, not only had he been a terrible brother to him and that he indeed deserved to be cut out of Josh's life, but that he needed him far more than Josh needed him. And in front of the ''entire classroom'', no less.

* ButtMonkey: Drake, and not in a funny way either. After Josh cuts ties with him, his guitar breaks, he can't gas up his own car, his benefits at the movie theater go away, he's almost late to class because Josh didn't wake him up, he gets a zit, and he ends up stuck with a lab partner who speaks so incoherently they can't do their experiment. It all comes to a head when he spills chemicals all over himself resulting in him having to take a power shower, which causes Drake to realize just how much of a piece of shit he's been to Josh and how much ''he'' needed ''him'".

Added DiffLines:

*ObliviousToHisOwnDescription: At first Drake believes that Josh's life will "fall apart" without him in it, even as it's obvious that his life is going downhill and Josh's is vastly improving. It isn't until the accident in chemistry class that Drake realizes that ''he'' was the one that needed Josh ''far'' more than Josh needed him.

Plot happens.

* RevengeBeforeReason: Granted, Josh has every reason to get angry at Drake, but he should know better than to take his anger out on him ''in a classroom''. Naturally, [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Josh gets into even more trouble]].

Being discussed regularly, thus probably not applicable.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Drake is a slacker who obviously cannot do stuff on his own and he can barely take care of himself, so he often requires Josh to do it for him. When Josh leaves him, his life ends up an absolute wreck.
** Josh has no choice but to run to school since Drake took the car without him to make out with his girlfriend. While he states that he has 23 minutes until the first bell, he barely makes it to class in time and has some sweat stains on his shirt. His school is implied to be in a far away distance from his home, so even if he had around half an hour before school starts, it's unlikely for him to show up on time if he runs there on foot.
** While getting angry at Drake is completely understandable, the fact that Josh [[RevengeBeforeReason threatened to beat up Drake on school grounds]] gets him thrown out of class again. Mr. Roland may be a rather harsh teacher, but not allowing Josh back in class for threatening a classmate is perfectly justified.
** Josh is sent home after he is kicked out of class, but his anger had notably diminished since it had been enough time to clear his head. That being said, when Drake tries to apologize to Josh for what happened, Josh [[RejectedApology refuses to forgive Drake]], instead [[TranquilFury calmly announcing to him that he is done with him]] after having enough of his antics. It is not easy to forgive someone if they have caused you so much trouble since day one, especially if the last straw involves ruining something that really mattered to you.
** Drake loudly yells that he's gonna go into the movie without paying for a ticket, announcing it to several of the employees, including Josh. Of course, this gets him kicked out.

Example sounds like it's arguing with itself

* ArtisticLicenseEducation: Josh ends up missing his chemistry exam due to him running late for class and Mr. Roland does three things that would have gotten him in big trouble at many but not all high schools but are perfectly acceptable in college and becoming increasingly acceptable at high school today:
** He kicks Josh out of class for tardiness. While teachers are allowed to punish tardy students, it's usually just a mark on their record, and kicking a student out is rather disproportionate.
*** However, locking the door and allowing no one in after class begins is considered quite normal at college level and at many private schools.
*** Furthermore, an increasing number of high schools have begun to do this in light of school violence and school shootings.
** He makes Josh retake the exam on a Saturday at six in the morning. Teachers are only allowed to do test make-ups on weekdays because schools are not open to students on weekends, especially at 6 A.M.
*** Again, this is considered quite normal at the college level and at many private schools.
** He drops Josh's grade by a whole letter. Teachers are not allowed to do this to a student just because they were late to class. Thankfully, Mr. Roland rescinds this after seeing how well Josh did on the exam, but still.
*** This is also quite common at college level and at many private schools.
